Abstract

The culinary culture of wedding in the Chosŏn Dynasty originated from the local customs in the Shilla(新羅) Period that were influenced by Buddhism. In the beginning of Goryeo(高麗), the ceremonies of the coming of age under the influence of Confucianism was reorganized imitating the system of the Dang(唐) Dynasty system. This system merged with the existing culinary culture of wedding to form an outline of the system we find in the middle age. The Chosŏn Dynasty which succeeded Goryeo established the vast bureaucratic system of government and established the doctrines of etiquettes in family based on Jujagarye(朱子家禮). The basic articulation under consideration in this paper is how is the culinary culture of wedding promoted in the Chosŏn Dynasty related to the solidification of Sa(士) and Daebu(大夫), the governing rules of the Chosŏn Dynasty. Accordingly, the paper examines the culinary culture of wedding in the Chosŏn Dynasty found in Uirye(儀禮), and Jujagarye(朱子家禮).
