초록
이 논문은 광주항쟁 당시에 해외의 인권 단체들이 전개한 연대 활동의 형성과 그 의의를 정리할 목적으로 작성되었다. 이 작업을 위해서 이 논문은 미국 UCLA 대학의 동아시아 도서관이 소장하고 있는 광주항쟁 관련 자료를 분석하였으며, 이 분석을 통해서 해외의 인권 단체들이 광주항쟁을 중심으로 초국적 후원 네트워크(transnational advocacy network)를 형성하고 있음을 확인하였다. 북미와 일본 지역을 중심으로 활동한 이 초국적 후원 네트워크는 광주항쟁의 실상을 신속하게 해외에 전파하였고, 미국 정부와 한국 정부에 압력을 행사하여 광주항쟁 이후 한국의 정치 과정 변화에 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤다. 이 논문은 이 기초 연구를 토대로 이러한 초국적 후원 네트워크가 미국의 한국 관련 외교 정책 및 국내의 정세 변화에 어떤 영향을 주었는가에 대한 본격적인 실증 연구가 필요함을 지적하였다.

Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to analyze the formation and political implications of solidarity activities initiated by overseas human rights groups during the Gwangju Uprising period. Analysis of documents on the Gwangju Uprising housed in the East Asian Library of UCLA confirm that overseas human rights groups had formed a transnational advocacy network (TAN) in order to monitor the political and human rights situation in South Korea. This transnational advocacy network, centered in North America and Japan, quickly spread the actual urgent situation of the Gwangju massacre abroad while also exerting pressure on American and South Korean governments to bring political change after the Gwangju Uprising. The paper concludes by pointing out the need for more detailed empirical studies on how these activities of the TAN influenced US foreign policies and changes in South Korean politics after the Gwangju Uprising.
