재일동포가 한국 야구에 미친 영향: 장명부를 중심으로

초록

한국 야구는 1950년대 후반부터 1980년대까지 아시아 중위권에서 세계 정상권으로 급성장했다. 기존 연구가 국가 정책과 프로야구 출범 등 제도적 요인에 집중한 반면, 재일동포 선수들의 역할은 저평가되어 왔다. 본 연구는 1956년부터1990년대 초반까지 한국 야구에 참여한 약 50명의 재일동포 선수를 역사적 문헌, 통계, 구술 증언으로 분석했다. 1983년 30승을 기록한 장명부를 중심으로, 이들이 한국 프로야구 형성기에 일본 야구 기술을 전달한 핵심 매개자였음을 실증했다. 1980년대 초반 재일동포 선수 유입 집중은 일본 사회 차별, 한국 프로야구 출범, 한ㆍ일 연봉 격차 축소(1980년 5.38배 → 1982년 1.76배)가 교차한 ‘구조적창’의 산물이었으나, 1985년 플라자 합의 이후 빠르게 닫혔다. 저평가는 민족주의 서사, 제도사 중심 연구, 언론의 계약금 집중 보도, 기억 소멸이 복합 작용한 결과였다. 본 연구는 재일동포 선수를 한국 야구 근대화의 구조적 행위자로 재배치하여, 한국 스포츠사를 동아시아 노동시장 교차와 디아스포라 네트워크를 통한초국적 과정으로 이해하는 시각을 제공한다.

Abstract

Korean baseball experienced dramatic growth from the late 1950s to the 1980s, rising from a mid-tier position in Asia to a world-class level. Existing research has primarily focused on state-led policies and the establishment of professional baseball, while the role of Zainichi Korean players has remained undervalued. This study analyzes approximately 50 Zainichi Korean players who participated in Korean baseball between 1956 and the early 1990s through the examination of historical documents, statistics, and oral testimonies. Focusing on Chang Myung-bu, who recorded 30 wins in 1983, the study demonstrates that these players functioned as key mediators in the transfer of Japanese baseball techniques during the formative period of Korean professional baseball. The concentration of Zainichi Korean player migration in the early 1980s resulted from a “structural window” created by discrimination within Japanese society, the establishment of Korean professional baseball, and the narrowing salary gap between Korea and Japan (which declined from 5.38:1 in 1980 to 1.76:1 in 1982). However, this window closed rapidly following the 1985 Plaza Accord. The undervaluation of these players resulted from the complex interaction of nationalist narratives, institution-centered research trends, media emphasis on contract amounts, and the erosion of collective memory. This study repositions Zainichi Korean players as structural actors in the modernization of Korean baseball and offers a perspective that understands Korean sports history as a transnational process shaped by the intersection of East Asian labor markets and diaspora networks.
