This study investigates how the current representation of Koreans was established, to by addressing the question, “What kind of person is a Korean?” from the perspective of a foreigner. To this end, the study examined records in “Morning Calm,” which is a publication by an Anglican missionary in the early 20th century. Just as the current Korean Wave is formed by foreigners and the representation of Koreans is constructed, a similar pattern of the representation of Koreans being constructed by foreigners was present approximately 100 years ago. This study first investigated the representation of modern Koreans from both Korean and foreign perspectives, and then examined the sections describing Koreans within the scope of the study, spanning issues 200 through 229 of “Morning Calm”. Factors such as Korean educational zeal, familism, relationality, and collectivism exerted a substantial influence on shaping the representational structure of Koreans by foreigners, and these influences continue to shape the representation of Koreans to this day.
