Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to assess the current status of sterilization record management in dental clinics and propose measures to establish a systematic sterilization log management framework. Materials and Methods: To examine the status of sterilization management, an online survey was conducted among members of the Korean Dental Association from May to June 2024. A total of 261 responses were analyzed. Frequency analysis was used to examine the general characteristics of respondents and the features of steriliza- tion log creation and storage. Differences by type of medical institution were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. Results: Regarding sterilization log creation, 26.8% of respondents reported that they keep such records. Among them, 72.0% of dental hospitals and 22.0% of dental clinics reported doing so, with a statistically significant dif- ference (p<0.05). For sterilization log management, 24.5% reported that they manage it, with dental hospitals at 72.0% and dental clinics at 19.5%, showing a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Regarding sterilization log retention, the overall rate was 67.1%, with 83.3% for dental hospitals and 61.5% for dental clinics, also showing a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Sterilization logs hold significance beyond mere recordkeeping, serving as foundational data for quality management in healthcare and ensuring patient safety. The introduction of standardized forms, enhance- ment of governmental support systems, and implementation of integrated management strategies should be dis- cussed at the policy level. Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to assess the local irritation, disclosing efficacy, and ease of removal of dental plaque disclosing agents (PDAs) containing various colorants through clinical investigation. Materials and Methods: Four types of PDAs (A: HellotisTM solution, B: TraceTM solution, C: 2ToneTM solution, D: PlaqSearchTM two-tone tablet) were sequentially applied to 40 subjects at weekly intervals. Oral pain and gingival index were evaluated for local irritation assessment, while dental plaque index was assessed for efficacy. Results: The incidence rate of pain was not significantly different between groups (P>0.05). No changes in the Loe & Silness Gingival Index were observed in any PDA group after 1 week of application (P>0.05). The Patient Hy- giene Performance Index (PHP Index) for each plaque disclosing agent was ranked as B > C > A > D, with B having the highest staining ability. A statistically significant difference was observed between B and D (P<0.05). As a result of the equivalence test, A and C, A and D, and B and C were equivalent when the margin of clinical equivalence (△) was set to 0.5. There was no difference in the removal rate between the PDA groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: The clinical study illustrated that plaque disclosing agents, including the HellotisTM, efficiently stained plaque and were easily removed by brushing. No side effects were observed concerning oral pain or changes in gingival health following the application of the PDAs. (J Korean Dent Assoc 2025; 63(8): 243-250)

Abstract

Ischemic necrosis of the tongue is rare condition due to its rich vascular supply. No cases have been reported in Korea to date. A 55-year-old male with a history of dyslipidemia and fatty liver presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. Despite fluid resuscitation, he developed severe hypotension, requiring vasopressor support and mechanical ventilation. During his intensive care unit stay, the patient exhibited signs of disseminated intra- vascular coagulation, with progressive skin necrosis and thrombocytopenia. Upon extubation, oral examination revealed widespread mucosal discoloration and blood clots, and ischemic necrosis on dorsal surface of the tongue was confirmed. This case highlights the potential risk of tongue ischemia as a rare but serious complication of multifactorial cause including prolonged vasopressor use and endotracheal intubation. Further studies are needed to better understand its pathophysiology and improve management strategies. (J Korean Dent Assoc 2025; 63(8): 251-256)

Abstract

Seok-tae Ham was the first Korean professional dentist. He qualified during the Japanese colonial period and was a key founding father of dentistry in Korea. The current status of dentists in Korea can only be considered with recognition of the ceaseless efforts of such Korean dentists during the Japanese colonial period. I trust that we, too, are dentists who serve the country and use our knowledge to treat our patients with the same consideration and honor shown by pioneers like Seok-tae Ham. For his immense contributions to dentistry in Korea, he should thus be researched, his merits recorded, and he, as a highly influential Korean dentist, commemorated. Abstract

Dentist Seok-tae Ham was one of the leading collectors of Korean ancient art during the Japanese colonial peri- od, possessing thousands of such artifacts. According to newspaper records, he participated in seven exhibitions, loaning some 32 works of calligraphy, paintings by 14 Korean artists, and the Joseon Dynasty Ceramics Collection Volume 15, which contained photographs and descriptions of his 15-piece celadon and blue-and-white porcelain collection. Although these are only a part of his overall collection, Seoktae Ham's outstanding knowledge and aesthetic sense of Korean antiquities can be sufficiently observed by his collection choices. This collection can be considered a national treasure as he was especially fascinated by the aesthetics of ancient items, particularly small items and art pieces of unusual shape. Seoktae Ham’s collection of ancient art pieces was chosen not for economic reasons, but for their immense cultural value. (J Korean Dent Assoc 2025; 63(8): 266-273)

Abstract

During the Japanese colonial period, Seok-tae Ham (1889-?) founded the Hansung Dental Association, a Korean association created in opposition to Japanese dental groups. He can be credited as the person with the most dental ‘firsts’ in Korea. He was the first Korean to graduate from a regular dental school, the first officially regis- tered Korean dentist to operate in Korea, the first Korean to open a dental practice, and the first president of the first dental organization comprised of Koreans. Even though Seok-tae Ham was a known figure, was a key dental pioneer and achieved so much, he has been lost to Korean dental history. Through historical materials, we can confirm that he was a philanthropist, donating funds and time to local schools and communities, thereby raising oral hygiene awareness as part of his social service activities.
