Abstract

In the present study, Korean adolescent clients' and counselors' perceptions of helpful experiences in counseling were identified and compared via concept mapping. The concept mapping is a methodological approach combining qualitative and quantitative strategies. 20 adolescent clients were interviewed about their helpful experiences and 81 non-redundant statements extracted from those interviews were sorted and rated by themselves and their counselors. 8 thematic cluster-map was generated by concept mapping software: Restoring Hope and Emotional Security, Self-understanding and Acceptance, Relieving from Emotional Stresses, Satisfaction with Counseling Environment, Kindness from Counselors as an Adult, Feeling comfortable with Counselor, Counselor Respects for Clients, Counselor Specific and Active Intervention. Although the general structure of the concept map generated by clients was found to be consistent with that of counselors, their perspectives were different on the specific areas.

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to construct a set of circumplex scales for Korean version of the Interpersonal Adjective Scales(KIAS-40). A sample of university undergraduates(n=468) was used for this purpose of the study. The item scores were intercorrelated and subjected to a factor analysis in which two familiar interpersonal factors (that is, Affiliation and Control) were extracted. The factor loadings, communalities, and thematic contents were used to select the best items for eight 5-item circumplex scales. Factor analyses of the scores for these eight scales resulted in a clear two-factor solution, accounting for 60% of the variance. A post hoc chi-square test developed by Fisher(1983) was used to evaluate the circumplex structure of the KIAS-40 in this sample. This test suggested a high degree of convergence between the empirical locations of the KIAS-40 scales and the locations predicted by circumplex theory. The implications and limitations of the study were discussed along with some suggestions for future researches and psychotherapy practice.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate how adult attachment styles and factors are related with personality characteristics and stress coping strategies. For the purpose, literature review about the concept of adult attachment and the survey of 433 university students on the adult attachment with its relative factors were carried out. The results of the research are as follows : The secure attachment style obtained higher score in confidence factor and personality characteristics of activity, stability, and sociability than three insecure attachment styles. And the secure attachment style had lower tendency in neurosis, psychosis and antisocial behavior. When the secure style was confronted with the stress, she or he sought for the social support and used the problem solving strategy. Otherwise, the insecure attachment styles- dismissing, preoccupied, and fearful- showed the lower score in confidence and sociability, and they had high probability in neurosis and psychosis although three insecure styles responses were different from one anther respects. In the insecure styles, avoidance was their major stress coping strategy. Finally, the implications of these results to counseling and psychotherapy were discussed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of Sex-Role Identity and Parents' Child-rearing attitudes on career interest of elementary school students. To verify the study subject, surveys were distributed to 457 Grade 6 students in Gyeonggi-do. We performed factor analysis, t test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. As the results, boys showed high interest in career in Investigative type, while in Realistic, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional types, girls showed higher interest in career. Androgynous elementary school students showed more interest in Investigative, Realistic, Artistic, Social and Enterprising type than undifferentiated students. Furthermore, those who perceive their parents' child-rearing attitude as affectionate, achievement oriented, rational and regulatory showed higher career interest. Factors influencing career interest were gender, femininity, fathers' achievement oriented nurturing attitude, mothers' regulatory nurturing attitude and education level of mother. Among them, the biggest impacting factor was gender. Therefore, to enhance the career interest of elementary school students, parents need to have desirable nurturing attitudes. In the educational field, we need to develop gender equality education and counseling programs to do our best in counseling and educational efforts in order to overcome the stereotype of sex role and let them choose their career considering their own aptitudes and interests.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how the attitude of parents' child-rearing perceived by college students and their achievement goals affect career decisions. I came to suggest in this research which type of child-rearing attitude of parents is reasonable to their children in deciding their own careers. The child-rearing attitude of parents is classified into four groups; acceptance, rejection. autonomy, and control. Achievement goal is classified into mastery goal, performance approach goal, performance avoidance goal. Career decision level is classified into decision-making style, and career indecision. The main topics of this research are as follows; (1) What is the relation between the child-rearing attitude of parents and their children's achievement goal? (2) What is the relation between the child-rearing attitude of parents and career decision? For this research, 270 college students were selected as samples. The analysis of the questionnaire is summarized as follows; This research concludes that the child's mastery goal is increased when he or she recognizes his/her father has autonomy attitude and mother has acceptance attitude, and the child's performance approach goal is increased when the child recognizes that his/her mother has acceptance attitude or control attitude. The child's performance avoidance goal is increased when the child recognizes that his/her father has acceptance attitude or control attitude. Decision-making style increased when parents' acceptance attitude or autonomy attitude were recognized. Career indecision increased when parents' rejection attitude or control attitude were recognized.

Abstract

This study explored the relation between learning personality types and major satisfaction on academic achievement related variables (academic motivation, learning strategy, and GPA). A survey containing questions about learning personality types, major satisfaction, learning strategy, and GPA was administered to a sample of 606 college students in Seoul and Kyung Nam area. The results showed that among four academic personality types, Kyu-bum types used learning strategy most effectively and had high level of academic motivation with high GPAs. In contrast, Yi-sang types showed no significant relations to academic related variables. Although a level of major satisfaction didn't show a significant relationship, after further analysis, the results showed that students who expressed unsatisfaction towards their major, used learning strategy less effectively and had a lower level of academic motivation. The relation between learner related variables such as academic personality types and academic achievement related variables should further be discussed in the future.

Abstract

This study investigated a model of the mediating influences of anger-control and contact with delinquent friends in the relationship among socio-environmental school violence risk factors, protective factors and bullying at school. Data came from 311 junior high school students in Gwangju City. Results from the structural analysis indicated that, as hypothesized, anger-control mediated the effects of family environmental protective factors (communication with parents, parents' supervision) on bullying at school. And the relationship between school environmental violence protective factors (attachment to teacher, attachment to school) and bullying at school is explained by school environmental violence protective factor relations with two intervening constructs, anger-control and contact with delinquent friends. Furthermore, community environmental risk factor (exposure to media violence) had direct effect on bullying at school, as well as contact with delinquent friends mediated the relationship between exposure to media violence and bullying at school. In addition 3 alternative models were estimated. The results of the tests of the 3 alternative models were not supported by the data, further sustaining the validity of the hypothesized model. Lastly, implications and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract

The suicide sites were grouped into pro-suicide sites and anti-suicide sites, and the psychological aspects of those sites were analysed in view of sites' masters. Through the online and offline, a master of the suicide site and a master of the anti-suicide site were interviewed and the contents of interviews were analysed by the development and management of the sites, and the psychological background of those masters. The suicide site was closely related with the psychopatholgy of a site master, and the anti-suicide site was related with therapeutic experiences of both the master and users. But, the anti-suicide site was sometimes involved with the occurrences of the suicides because of the lack of knowledges and careful consideration for the potential dangerousness of suicide sites. The master of anti-suicide considered the conflict with the parents as a major source of suicide impulse, the adolescent as a major victim. The role of counseling psychologists with the suicide sites, prevention of suicide were discussed.
