Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the adaptation problems and stresses of the Christian homosexual males. For this thesis, in-depth interview was made for the 8 Christian homosexual males who are in the range of 30s and 40s. As a methodology of this thesis, the grounded theory designed by Strauss and Corbin was utilized. As a result of the analysis, 45 concepts, 24 subcategories and 12 categories were induced. In terms of the causalities, the circumstances of recognizing as a homosexual by themselves have been conceptualized. Consequently, this study emphasized the stresses and the problems they have faced after admitting their sexual identity, Categorized this stress into “the stress of sexual orientation”. Regarding this category, “negative perception of the society” and “no availability of professional helps” are also indicated. In prompting reciprocal role relating to the core theme, the personal conditions are as follows: understanding of homosexuality, acceptance by the families, supports from counselors and medical professionals and personal faith. The strategic approach to the reciprocal acts is determined by “how they cope” with the stress that arises in respect to their sexual orientation, and is classified into four styles of coping; problem oriented coping, social support pursuing, emotional relief coping, and hope oriented coping. Throughout this study, various styles of adaptation in Christian homosexual males in dealing with the stresses of their own sexual orientation were identified. Especially, classifying the process of homosexuals which covers from the point of recognizing their homosexuality for the first time to the point of accepting their true sexuality will enable counselors to be equipped with the necessary information in counseling with the Christian homosexual males
