Development of Intergroup Dialogue Facilitator Training Program in Korea

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to outline the process of developing a facilitator training program for Intergroup Dialogue (IGD). IGD is a semi-structured small group intervention designed to engage participants of different social identities in a dialogue about privilege and oppression. Given the challenges of training facilitators to implement IGD in Korea, we developed a program that incorporates Korean culture and effective dialogue-leading skills. To design the preliminary program, we conducted a comprehensive review of previous studies and sought consultation from an IGD expert based in the United States. After conducting the preliminary program and a Focus Group Interview with 19 participants, we refined the facilitator training program. The final program was evaluated by 8 experts for its content and structure. The final program, which included 2 sessions of theoretical lectures and 6 sessions of experiential practice, was implemented with 10 counselors. The implication and limitations of current study were discussed.
