Abstract

Hyunmong-Ssangryong-Ki(현몽쌍룡기) is the long novel of 18 volumes written in the late Chosen dynasty. The title implies that after two dragons appeared in dreams of their parents the two heroes of the work were born. As the title announced, in this work the life of the twin heros are arranged in a row and most motifs are repeatedly pictured. So the reader can understand the complicated story easily. But the characters of the two heroes contrast each other. The elder-brother, Cho Moo(조무), is the elegant man, so he indulged in romantic pursuits. But the younger-brother, Cho Seong(조성), is the virtuous man, so behaves circumspectly. So Geong, the first wife of Cho Moo is troubled with her husband. But Yang, the first wife of Cho Seong, respects her husband. in This work outwardly seems to focus on the twin heroes lives, but actually focuses on the lives of their wives. Those women were harmed with their parents family together. Then Yang, the first wife of Cho Seong was protected from harm by her husband, but Geong, the first wife of Cho Moo, was also harmed by her husband. thus the lives of those women are contrasted. The Writer of this work pictures the ideal model of patriarchal family life with these contrasting lives.
