Abstract

In our society, age strongly interferes in all kinds of meeting, and causes us a lot of tension and worry. Human being divides age, and age divides human being. The borders of ‘age’ divide and connect ‘meeting’ in a way. Such a way of meeting is the li(禮) of age. Some factors such as age-internal division and conflict, division and conflict between age and external elements other than age, as well as places of meeting make up one border and ask for its management. The li of age which divides borders is also divided by borders allows various methods and aims of power strategies. Older people find it easier to pay less respect to those with less age. Paying less respect in conversations gradually lead the aged to the status of commanding or to the status of becoming a legislator. In contrast, the less aged find it easier to have respectful attitude of the body and mind, or to become obedient active and passive respectively. The practices of age-li become the cause as well as the effect of a ‘vertical socialization’. Also, the excessive amount of nervousness due to paying courtesy by age makes meetings more difficult. Therefore, if we have to say ‘age-li’, it will become the ‘li’ that does not necessarily take age into consideration. This type of ‘li’ will not be li of commanding and obeying, or ‘upper and lower division’. Rather, it would be a ‘new type of li’ or ‘li of liberation’, in which differently aged people treat, respect, and concern one another as equals.
