Dehuirumen(The Gate of Virtue and Wisdom) is a Western learning book written by Griffith John(1831~1912) and his assistant Shen Zixing(1825~1887). It was translated into Korean by Horace G. Underwood(1859~1916) aided by an anonymous assistant, and published by the Korean Religious Tract Society in 1915. This study investigates the distribution of this book in Korea, the edition selected and why it was selected for translation, and how the translation differs from the original text. As a result of this inquiry, it was discovered that the book was introduced to the northern and central parts of Korea in 1883 and later spread in the southern part. Underwood chose the Shen edition published later than 1887 and translated it as literally as possible but amended it for Korean readers. Furthermore, he added or adjusted the text to better suit his theological stance and make it helpful for Korean believers’ practical use. There seems to be some misinterpretation caused by the translator’s limited understanding of Chinese terms and the tendency toward descriptive translation for Chinese scientific neologism.
