A Comparative Study of the National Collection Development Policy in Australia, Netherlands and South Korea

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to analyze the collection development policies of National Library of Australia and the National Library of the Netherlands and to derive implications for the collection development policies in the future. The collection development policies of these national libraries were analyzed with a focus on mission and responsibility, organization and personnel, budget and collection statistics, basic directions and principles of collection development, collection priorities, preservation and digitization, and deposit. The most special aspects of the national collection development of Australia and Netherlands were the trial of the new ways to change the collection development polices of NED online deposit system and the social media in line with the flow of the digital era and their own current situations. Based upon the results of this study, changing factors, several implications for developing the national collection for the National Library of Korea were suggested.
