Abstract
The main purpose of the article is to reexamine the characteristics of the political power of Taewongun. The study originates from the following questions. What was the political status of Taewongun in the political ‘structure’ of Chosun? Specifically, through what kind of ‘process’ could he acquire and maintain such a strong political power? Was he really a person who adhered to ‘national seclusion’ principles from the very beginning? What is the more appropriate approach to evaluate his political power? Through capturing “Taewongun's missionary contact trial case” as a clue in solving the aforementioned questions, this study proposes a different approach in interpreting the historic events of the time from the conventional explanations. The initial political power of Taewongun was not so strong. In addition, he even had intimacy with Catholicism and was seriously considering the possibility of forming an alliance with Russia along with France through a Catholic missionary. However, due to an unexpected course of events, Taewongun was on the verge of confronting a serious political crisis that would dramatically expose his plans to the public. In order to manage the crisis, he suddenly adopted the antiforeign policy and thoroughly oppressed Catholics. In other words, by taking the dramatic antiforeign policy on the verge of the anticipated domestic and foreign crises, he was able to solidify the political leadership of his own. However, due to his crisis management policy, the funnel of the choice for Chosun at that time became suddenly and extremely small. This is the paradox that Taewongun's manner of realism brought in times of great transformations.
