Abstract
By around the 1860s, Shanghai developed greatly and was nicknamed London of the East or Paris of the East, and there were many western merchants and missionaries active here. Oppert had arrived in Shanghai in the early 1850s where he engaged in commercial activities, and Jenkins also grew up in Shanghai following his father, making him fluent in Chinese. Here in Shanghai, the ‘paradise of adventurers’, they dreamed of gaining huge riches under the pretense of opening up the ports of Joseon Dynasty. Furthermore, many Catholic missionary unions opened offices to be in charge of economic activities in Shanghai that were used as their missionary representatives in Shanghai, allowing opportunities for many Catholic missionaries. Father Féron, who resided at the Shanghai office of the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris, joined in planning to rob the tomb of Nam‒Yeon Goon. This shows that the Oppert tomb robbery incident was conducted amidst the various political, social, economic and religious situations of the 19th century.
