Abstract

Kim, Jongbok. 2024. Signㅡbased Construction Grammar and an Implication for the Study of Sign Languages. Sign Languages and Linguistics Convergence Research, 1(1), 35-57. This paper reviews a constructionist view of morphology and syntax that takes language as a network of form-meaning pairs or constructions. The view regards the grammar as a system of constraints governing the relation between form and meaning, resorting to no transformational or derivational operations within grammar other than constraints. Each piece of a grammatical structure is thus licensed by some constructions just as each node in a well-formed context-free tree structure is licensed by some grammar rules. The constructionist view could offer a viable way for the study of sign languages that convey linguistic information not simply via time dimension. but also via width, length and breadth dimension
