The Mediating Role of Maladaptive Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies in the Relationship Between Loneliness and Problematic Social Media Use among Young Adults

Abstract

Loneliness has been identified as a major risk factor for various mental health problems among young adults. In particular, loneliness may contribute to problematic social media use in digital environments, in which cognitive and emotional processing plays an important role. Accordingly, this study examined the mediating role of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (self-blame, other-blame, rumination, and catastrophizing) in the relationship between loneliness and problematic social media use. A total of 500 young adults aged 18 to 35 years completed self-report measures assessing loneliness, problematic social media use, and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Mediation analyses using bootstrapping indicated that loneliness was significantly associated with both problematic social media use and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Among the subcomponents, only rumination and catastrophizing significantly mediated the relationship between loneliness and problematic social media use, with the indirect effect of catastrophizing exceeding that of self-blame. Additionally, parallel multiple mediation analyses by gender exhibited that rumination was a significant mediator in women, whereas catastrophizing was significant in men. These findings suggest that loneliness may influence problematic social media use both directly but indirectly through cognitive processes such as rumination and catastrophizing, and that these mechanisms may differ by gender.
