This study is examined the dual mediating effects of upward social comparison on social networking sites(SNS) and rumination in the relationship between fear of missing out(FoMO) and depression among early adults using Instagram. An online self-report survey was conducted with 440 adults using the K-FoMO, SNS Upward Comparison Experience Scale, K-Ruminative Response Scale, and the CES-D. The results showed that FoMO did not have a significant direct effect on depression but had a significant indirect effect. Rumination partially mediated the relationship between FoMO and depression. Additionally, a significant sequential mediation effect of SNS upward social comparison and rumination was found, indicating that individuals with higher FoMO are more likely to engage in upward social comparison on SNS, which in turn increases rumination and subsequently contributes to depressive symptoms.
