본 연구는 죽음태도의 하위 요인(죽음공포, 죽음회피, 도피수용, 접근수용, 중립수용)을 기준으로 중년의 잠재프로파일을 도출하고, 각 프로파일 간 노화불안, 삶의 의미, 정신적 웰빙, 죽음 대처 유능감의 차이를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 중년 500명을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하고, 잠재프로파일 분석과 다변량 공분산분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과, ‘비관여(32.5%)’, ‘실존적 수용(9.7%)’, ‘불안 회피(52.3%)’, ‘현실 도피적 수용(5.5%)’이라는 네 유형이 도출되었다. ‘비관여’ 유형은 죽음을 두려워하거나 회피하지도, 적극적으로 수용하지도 않는 태도를, ‘실존적 수용’ 유형은 내세 믿음에 기반한 긍정적인 수용 태도를 보였다. 반면, ‘불안 회피’ 유형은 죽음에 대해 강한 공포와 회피를 보였고, ‘현실 도피적 수용’ 유형은 죽음을 고통의 도피처로 인식하였다. 또한 유형별로 노화불안, 삶의 의미, 정신적 웰빙, 죽음 대처 유능감에서 유의한 차이가 확인되었다. ‘비관여’ 유형은 상대적으로 높은 정신적 웰빙을, ‘실존적 수용’ 유형은 가장 높은 삶의 의미와 죽음 대처 유능감을 보인 반면, ‘불안 회피’ 및 ‘현실 도피적 수용’ 유형은 높은 노화불안과 낮은 삶의 의미를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 중년의 죽음태도가 다양한 양상으로 구성되며, 이에 따라 심리적 적응과 삶의 의미가 달라질 수 있음을 시사한다.
This study aimed to identify latent profiles of death attitudes among middle-aged adults based on five dimensions-fear of death, death avoidance, escape acceptance, approach acceptance, and neutral acceptance-and to examine differences in psychological characteristics across these profiles. A sample of 500 middle-aged adults was surveyed. Latent Profile Analysis revealed four distinct profiles: “Detachment” “Existential Acceptance,” “Anxious Avoidant,” and “Realistic Escape Acceptance.” The “Detachment” group neither feared nor actively accepted death, whereas The “Existential Acceptance” group positively embraced death, grounded in afterlife belief. In contrast, the “Anxious Avoidant” group showed high levels of death fear and avoidance, while the “Realistic Escape Acceptance” group viewed death as an escape from the pain of life, showing a high level of escape-oriented acceptance. Significant differences were also found across the profiles in aging anxiety, meaning in life, mental well-being, and perceived competence in coping with death.
