본 연구는 동료의 죽음을 경험한 소방공무원의 애도 경험과 의미를 탐구하고자 하였다. 동료의 죽음을 경험한 소방공무원 4명을 대상으로 심층 면담을 실시하였으며, 60개의 중심 의미와 16개의 기본 주제가 도출되었고, 이는 6개의 본질적 주제로 통합하였다. 분석은 van Manen이 제시한 네 가지 실존체 차원 속에서 상호 순환적 구조로 이루어졌다. 연구 결과, 첫째, ‘박탈된 애도’에서 나타나는 조직 문화와 생존자 죄책감 속에서 스스로 슬픔을 검열하고 정서적 고립을 선택하는 ‘슬픔을 검열하는 생존자의 분투’를 겪고 있었다. 둘째, 애도를 언어화하지 못한 채 신체화 증상을 감당하는 ‘홀로 견디는 소방관의 무게’는 정상적인 애도를 지연시키고 지속 비애 양상을 강화하였다. 셋째, 일상 공간에서 동료의 죽음을 재경험하게 하는 ‘현장과 몸에 각인된 동료의 죽음’은 복합 외상 경험자로서 고인의 감각과 이미지를 현재형으로 경험하고 있음을 보여주었다. 마지막으로 시간의 경과 및 동료․조직의 지지를 바탕으로 상실을 재구성하면서 ‘동료의 죽음과 함께 재구성되는 삶’, ‘다시 현장으로’ 나아가는 외상 후 성장과 공동체적 연대의 과정이 도출되었다. 본 연구는 동료의 죽음을 경험한 소방공무원의 애도가 개인적 정서 처리 과정을 넘어 실존적․조직적 맥락에서 이해되어야 함을 시사한다.
This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the mourning experiences of four firefighters who experienced a colleague’s death. Guided by van Manen’s methodology, data analysis derived six essential themes across four existential dimensions (spatiality, corporeality, relationality, and temporality). First, through ‘disenfranchised grief’ and ‘the survivor’s struggle to censor sadness,’ participants deprived themselves of the right to mourn due to survivor guilt. Second, ‘the weight of firefighters enduring alone’ showed that the internalization of grief as somatic symptoms delayed the normal mourning. Third, ‘the death of a colleague imprinted on the scene and body’ triggered trauma re-experiencing in daily spaces, fixing sensory impressions of the deceased. Finally, ‘a life reconstructed while living with the death of a colleague’ and ‘returning to the scene’ reflected post-traumatic growth and communal solidarity. These findings suggest that the mourning of firefighters following a colleague’s death must be understood beyond individual emotional processing and within existential and organizational contexts.
