Abstract

Jo Hyang' poetics related to the auditory sense has the clarification and creativity that point out the context of the history of poetry and unravel it unequivocally. Because we have paid attention to his essays which were busy trying the simple introduction of western avant-garde theory, we unnoticed Jo Hyang's this aspect. Jo Hyang listed the history of poetry on his own creative view. In his view, poetry has three layers: the poetry until 19th century in which “external rhyme” dominated, the poetry of symbolism which values much of “sound as the symbol of sensation and feeling” and the poetry of avant-garde which stresses “the poésie of sound”. But the three layers above can be included in two category: musicality and sound. The first two layers which center on musicality belongs to 'the metaphysics of presence' mediated by the voice. The established poetry developed through the voice is formulated by the belief in the presence of the transcendental world which is hypothesized. On the contrary, the sound-centered avant-garde poetry stands on the logic of différence which denies the metaphysics of presence. It disapproves the presence of the signified and emphasizes the free play of the signifier. The denial of the world of meaning amounts to putting an emphasis on the materiality of the signifier. Jo Hyang's poetics which classified lucidly the history of poetry within the framework of the musicality and the sound should be evaluated as the high level arguments in that he caught intuitively the world of post modernism and described it logically. It should be come into the spotlight that his poetics was deduced from the thorough examination of avant-garde and consistent philosophical foundation.
