In the history of Confucianism, the emergence of new philosophy had often accompanied with concomitant new Gyeonghak. After the emergence of Yangmyeonghak (the study of Wang, Yang-Ming’s philosophy) in the Ming dynasty, Li, Zhuo-Wu played a leading role to develop concomitant new Gyeonghak. In his Noneopyung, Li, Zhuo-Wu de-sanctified the Scriptures and the holy man (Confucius), and argued that the philosophies between Confucianism and Buddhism are interconnected. He used pithy expressions in order to explain his opinions, and paid special attention to a literary style in the scriptures. All of these characteristics—de-sanctification, interconnectedness between Confucianism and Buddhism, usage of pithy expressions, and interest on a literary style—were new, which had not been shown in previous Gyeonghak. I argue that Li, Zhuo-Wu’s Noneohak with these characteristics was influenced by philosophical characteristics of Yangmyeonghak and played a pioneer role in understanding Gyeonghak in the later Ming dynasty.
