Abstract
The Dukcheon sawoo yeonon rok was a new biographical directory of Nammyong School which was compiled by Woo Seon Ha while he was the director of Dukcheon Seowon in late 1950s. As the Sanhae sawoo yeonon rok, which had been compiled by In Park during King Injo period, couldn’t include the whole members of the school and there also had been a limitation in the extent of the relevant materials a single person could collect, the new directory was to make up for these weak points. The main peculiarity of this directory, compared to the former ones that have been only composed of friends and disciples, is that it puts four persons in the beginning as the origin of Shik Jo’s learning and includes the people in later periods who were influenced by Jo. Even in the case of the friends and disciples there was a drastic addition and a change of arrangement. These aspects provided a momentum for the conflicts among the descendants of Jo’s main disciples, In Hong Jeong, Woo Ong Kim, Gu Jeong, Geon Oh, concerning the range and order of compilation. The assertion on Woo Ong Kim’s position within Nammyong school has an indispensable relation with the Chong‒Hoe dispute among the descend‒ ants of Woo Ong Kim and Gu Jeong. But the problem has come to the fore again as Jo’s descendents living in Duksan criticized Woo Ong Kim because they perceived the Duksanbi epigraph composed by Mok Heo as disparaging Shik Jo and being based upon necrology written by Kim. The members of Hoeyeon Seodang joined the process with Dukcheon Seowon and, mobilizing the Confucians of Gangzwa district, not only gained supremacy over the arguments of Woo Ong Kim’s descendants but also tried to put Gu Jeong on the first among Jo’s disciples, which couldn’t be achieved in the end.
