Abstract

This study focuses on the earth deity (Jisin), which is closely related to human life and governs the land. It examines the content composition of the Jeonbuk Jisin Gut (a traditional ritual) and explores the characteristics of Jisin through the rich narrative content of its songs, especially in comparison to those of other regions. The research findings reveal that Jisin governs the foundation and space fundamental to human life, with the area beneath the main pillar (jucho) serving as its core. Furthermore, Jisin is revered as a deity of wealth, responsible for the prosperity of families and agriculture, and plays a significant role in ensuring family stability and prosperity. Offerings such as grains were traditionally placed around the jucho to seek Jisin’s assistance in supporting the family’s livelihood. Although belief in Jisin has weakened over time, traces of these rituals can still be observed near the jucho. The decline in Jisin worship is also reflected in its blending with Cheollyung, a deity residing behind the house, whose rituals are conducted at the earthenware jar stand. This study has uncovered a unique belief system centered around Jisin, distinct from other deities like Cheollyung, which existed before the decline of Jisin worship. Through this research, we gain insights into the previously overlooked content composition of Jeonbuk Jisin Gut and the characteristics of Jisin. Furthermore, this study contributes to the research on the songs of Jeonbuk hereditary shamans, which are known for their high quality and artistic value. It represents a significant first attempt to analyze the content of Jeonbuk Jisin Gut in detail and elucidate the characteristics of Jisin, based on its narrative.
