Abstract

Is there a relationship between students' perceptions of language authenticity and learning outcomes? This study aimed to explore the experiences of sign language users regarding the authenticity of sign language and its learning effects. Self-reported surveys were conducted with hearing university students (n=40) on the following topics: commonalities between sign language and other languages, unique features distinguishing sign language from other languages, positive experiences perceiving sign language as their own language, and overall perceptions of sign language authenticity. A total of 89.6% of students reported changes in their use of facial expressions and gestures. Based on word cloud analysis, the findings revealed that sign language users recognized several aspects of its authenticity, including improved communication skills, enhanced emotional expression, positive emotional experiences, behavioral changes, and increased attention to others. These results suggest that perceiving the authenticity of sign language may not only enhance communication skills but also influence behavioral and emotional aspects of social interactions with others.
