Preliminary Design Framework for CHARR-Based Active Air Disinfection Systems in Military Facilities

Abstract

Purpose: This study develops a preliminary design framework for active air disinfection systems in military facilities, using CHARR as a reference architecture rather than as a field-validated product. It addresses the need for safer, continuous indoor environmental management in barracks, medical spaces, command rooms, training facilities, and enclosed naval spaces. Research Design & Data: The study applies a design science and evidence-mapping approach. It synthesizes peer-reviewed literature, technical reports, laboratory and chamber test summaries, hospital application materials, safety documents, product specifications, and military facility requirements. Evidence was interpreted as design-relevant support, not as direct proof of military effectiveness. Research Results: The framework identifies five core modules: catalytic reaction, airflow and HVAC integration, filtration and deodorization, sensing and control, and monitoring and management. It further proposes five facility-specific application models and a staged deployment pathway from local pilot installation to sensor integration, HVAC linkage, local dashboard management, and approved central reporting. Safety monitoring should include H₂O₂, ozone, VOCs, CO₂, PM, temperature, humidity, device status, alarms, and maintenance records. Conclusion: CHARR/NCC-type systems may support military indoor air management when treated as part of an integrated environmental-control platform. Future work should conduct controlled field demonstrations under military conditions before large-scale deployment and policy evaluation.
