Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a laughter therapy program on successful aging, heart rate variability (HRV), and SOC-based coping strategies in middle-aged women. Research design, data and methodology: A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design was used. The study targeted middle-aged women and applied a 6-week laughter therapy program. Data were collected using pulse wave–based HRV measurements (SDNN, LF/HF ratio, HRV-Index, TP, HF, LF) and questionnaires assessing SOC coping strategies and successful aging. Data were analyzed to compare pre- and post-intervention changes between groups. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements in successful aging, SOC coping strategies, and selected HRV indices (SDNN, LF/HF ratio, HRV-Index). However, no significant differences were found in TP, HF, and LF between groups. Conclusions: The laughter therapy program was effective in enhancing physiological regulation, coping strategies, and successful aging in middle-aged women. It suggests potential as a practical community-based health promotion intervention, although further research with rigorous design and long-term follow-up is needed.
Purpose: This study examines how indoor air quality and infection-reduction issues have been discussed in military living and operational environments. Research Design and Data: The study employed a longitudinal text-mining approach based on a final corpus of 101 coded records collected between 2016 and 2026. The dataset integrated news articles, policy and legal documents, scholarly literature, technical standards, and institutional case materials from Korea and selected overseas military contexts. The corpus was analyzed using frequency analysis, time-series analysis, topic modeling, co-occurrence analysis, keyword prominence mapping, and comparative visual analytics. Results: The findings show that military indoor-air discourse is concentrated in barracks, living quarters, training environments, and shipboard spaces. The issue became most visible during the COVID-19 period, particularly through collective infection incidents in recruit training centers, naval vessels, and Air Force training units. Since 2023, however, the discourse has increasingly shifted toward barracks modernization, mold mitigation, HVAC improvement, accommodation renewal, and environmental standards. The Korean corpus was more strongly associated with outbreak-driven and incident-centered themes, whereas the overseas corpus emphasized modernization and systems-oriented environmental management. Conclusions: Military indoor-air issues should be understood not as a narrow device problem, but as a multidimensional systems issue involving infection control, troop living conditions, environmental quality, and facility modernization.
Purpose: This study aimed to comprehensively examine the effects of expectations regarding aging and SOC (Selection, Optimization, and Compensation) coping strategies on the quality of life among middle-aged women. Research design, data and methodology: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed. For the quantitative phase, a survey was conducted with 188 middle-aged women aged 40–65, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. For the qualitative phase, focus group interviews were conducted with 12 participants and analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. Results: Expectations regarding aging and SOC coping strategies showed significant positive correlations with quality of life. The major factors influencing quality of life were SOC coping strategies and expectations regarding aging, with living standard also identified as a significant factor. Qualitative findings revealed differences in perceptions of aging and coping strategies according to living standards; participants with higher living standards demonstrated proactive self-management and positive perceptions of aging, whereas those with lower living standards exhibited economic insecurity and more dependent attitudes. Conclusion: To improve the quality of life of middle-aged women, interventions that strengthen SOC coping strategies and enhance positive expectations regarding aging are needed. Additionally, the development of tailored programs that consider living standards is required.
Purpose: This study develops a preliminary design framework for active air disinfection systems in military facilities, using CHARR as a reference architecture rather than as a field-validated product. It addresses the need for safer, continuous indoor environmental management in barracks, medical spaces, command rooms, training facilities, and enclosed naval spaces. Research Design & Data: The study applies a design science and evidence-mapping approach. It synthesizes peer-reviewed literature, technical reports, laboratory and chamber test summaries, hospital application materials, safety documents, product specifications, and military facility requirements. Evidence was interpreted as design-relevant support, not as direct proof of military effectiveness. Research Results: The framework identifies five core modules: catalytic reaction, airflow and HVAC integration, filtration and deodorization, sensing and control, and monitoring and management. It further proposes five facility-specific application models and a staged deployment pathway from local pilot installation to sensor integration, HVAC linkage, local dashboard management, and approved central reporting. Safety monitoring should include H₂O₂, ozone, VOCs, CO₂, PM, temperature, humidity, device status, alarms, and maintenance records. Conclusion: CHARR/NCC-type systems may support military indoor air management when treated as part of an integrated environmental-control platform. Future work should conduct controlled field demonstrations under military conditions before large-scale deployment and policy evaluation.
Purpose: This study examined the field performance of energy recovery ventilation (ERV)-related ventilation improvements for indoor air quality (IAQ) in public school food service facilities through a secondary exploratory analysis of previously reported field data and certified ERV performance information. Research Design and Data: Pre- and post-improvement reduction rates for seven pollutants (PM10, PM2.5, CO2, NO2, CO, TVOC, and HCHO) were compiled for cooking rooms and cafeterias in three schools, of which two provided matched before-and-after data. Pollutant reduction patterns were assessed descriptively, and certified ERV indicators, including airflow capacity, power consumption, heat-recovery efficiency, and noise level, were summarized as technical performance information. Because raw repeated-measurement data were unavailable, inferential testing, formal correlation analysis, and causal modeling were not performed. Results: Particulate pollutants showed the most consistent reductions, with PM10 and PM2.5 exceeding 55% across the four matched space-level observations. NO2 and CO showed moderate reductions, whereas CO2 showed smaller and more variable changes. TVOC showed inconsistent or negative responses, suggesting the influence of non-ventilation sources such as cooking materials, cleaning agents, and indoor chemical emissions. The available data were insufficient to formally evaluate the relationship between certified ERV airflow capacity and pollutant reduction. Conclusions: ERV-related ventilation improvement appears effective for reducing cooking-generated particulates in public school food service facilities. However, VOC control requires source-management strategies in addition to ventilation. These findings provide preliminary field-based evidence for larger multi-site validation studies and future operation-level performance assessments.
Purpose: This study develops a theoretical framework explaining how preventive conflict management contributes to community wellbeing through the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI). Previous studies have primarily emphasized post-conflict intervention and resolution, while relatively limited attention has been given to preventive educational approaches that influence communal interaction before conflict escalation occurs. Research design, data and methodology: This study adopts a conceptual research design based on an integrative literature review. Prior studies from conflict management, organizational psychology, community psychology, and social wellbeing research were systematically synthesized to identify relationships among conflict response patterns, communication structures, collaborative interaction, and communal trust formation. Results: The findings identify four mechanisms connecting conflict prevention and community wellbeing: self-awareness development, communicative trust formation, collaborative interaction enhancement, and relational accountability reinforcement. Preventive conflict education enables communities to recognize recurring behavioral responses before destructive escalation emerges. Conclusions: Conflict prevention should be understood as a foundational mechanism supporting sustainable community wellbeing, collective resilience, and long-term relational stability. Furthermore, the framework reinterprets conflict responses as learned behavioral patterns rather than isolated interpersonal failures, suggesting that educational interventions can improve communication norms, reduce relational polarization, strengthen cooperative decision-making processes, and support healthier communal environments across diverse organizational and community contexts through preventive and reflective learning.
Purpose: This study aims to reconceptualize outdoor leisure safety as a preventive public safety governance issue rather than a matter confined to individual caution, recreational participation, or post-accident response. It examines how risks arising from hiking, camping, trekking, cycling, fishing, water-related leisure, and marine leisure may become public safety concerns when they involve foreseeable hazards, insufficient risk information, delayed rescue access, or fragmented institutional responsibility. Research design, data and methodology: This study adopts a qualitative and design-oriented research approach grounded in legal-institutional analysis, conceptual clarification, and normative policy design. Instead of empirical measurement or statistical accident analysis, it develops a conceptual framework for outdoor leisure safety governance by examining the relationship among disaster risk communication, public safety literacy, preventive behavior, legal accountability, and feedback-based institutional improvement. Results: The analysis shows that outdoor leisure safety requires an integrated governance structure linking risk communication, public safety literacy, preventive action, legal accountability, and post-accident learning. It also demonstrates that fragmented approaches based solely on individual negligence, formal warnings, post-accident rescue, or sector-specific regulation are insufficient to prevent avoidable harm in outdoor leisure contexts. Conclusions: The study concludes that outdoor leisure safety should be understood as a convergent field of disaster risk prevention, citizen capacity-building, and legally accountable public safety governance. Public authorities and relevant private actors are not required to eliminate all risks inherent in outdoor leisure activities, but they should establish reasonable preventive measures where risks are foreseeable, serious, and institutionally manageable. The proposed framework supports a proportionate safety governance model that protects public well-being while preserving the autonomy and social value of outdoor leisure participation.
This literature review investigates the rapid expansion of the gig economy and its multifaceted impact on the psychological well-being of platform workers, juxtaposed with the ethical responsibilities of platform companies. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, and Carroll’s Pyramid of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the study systematically categorizes the determinants of worker well-being. The findings reveal a significant duality: while gig work offers flexibility and autonomy, it simultaneously introduces profound threats such as income instability, social isolation, algorithmic control, and identity crises. These structural challenges frequently frustrate essential psychological needs, leading to burnout and precariousness. The review further identifies a critical vacuum in platform ethics, where companies often prioritize economic survival and shareholder value over legal, ethical, and philanthropic duties. Consequently, this research proposes an integrated Platform Wellbeing Governance framework that emphasizes algorithmic transparency, fair distributive justice, and institutional support systems. By transitioning toward a governance model that internalizes worker welfare, platform companies can mitigate the psychological costs of precarious labor. This study provides a robust theoretical foundation for future empirical inquiry and offers actionable insights for policymakers, corporate managers, and platform designers aiming to ensure that the promise of labor flexibility translates into sustainable well-being and long-term dignity.
Background: Women undergoing infertility treatment face significant psychological burdens, yet the mechanisms by which psychosocial resources enhance their resilience remain insufficiently understood. Purpose: This study examined the relationships among family support, ego-resiliency, psychological well-being, and resilience in women with infertility, and tested the mediating effect of psychological well-being. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was employed. Data were collected from 210 women with infertility attending fertility clinics at three general hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, between January and June 2025. Validated instruments were used to measure family support (FSS), ego-resiliency (ERS), psychological well-being (K-PWB), and resilience (RS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression analysis, and Baron and Kenny's mediation analysis. Results: Mean scores were: family support 3.84±0.61, ego-resiliency 3.71±0.58, psychological well-being 3.62±0.67, and resilience 3.78±0.63. Resilience was significantly and positively correlated with family support (r=.61, p<.001), ego-resiliency (r=.68, p<.001), and psychological well-being (r=.72, p<.001). Psychological well-being partially mediated the relationships between both family support and resilience and ego-resiliency and resilience. The total explanatory power for resilience was 63.4%. Conclusion: Family support and ego-resiliency enhance resilience both directly and indirectly through psychological well-being. Nursing interventions targeting all three factors are essential for improving resilience in infertile women.
Purpose: This study aims to develop a university liberal arts course designed to cultivate convergent thinking skills and integrated problem-solving competencies required in a rapidly changing and diversifying knowledge-based society. Research design, data and methodology: Drawing on foundational disciplines and theories of convergence education, this study developed a liberal arts course titled “Understanding the World with Convergent Thinking: A Convergent Approach to Everyday Problems,” which approaches everyday social issues from various academic perspectives. The study employed literature analysis to establish a theoretical foundation and applied curriculum development research methods. Results: To systematically cultivate convergent thinking, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, communication, ethical judgment, and collaboration competencies, the course was designed using a “process-oriented learning framework” consisting of the following stages: Recognition of Real-World Problems –> Analysis of Perspectives by Discipline –> Convergent Interpretation –> Proposal of Practical Alternatives –> Self-Reflection and Expansion. Conclusions: This study is significant because it proposes a practical convergence-oriented liberal arts course grounded in the integration of foundational disciplines, thereby contributing to the cultivation of convergent thinking competencies.
Purpose: This study proposes safety management and institutional improvement measures to prevent accidents in temporary construction works. Methods: Literature reviews, regulatory analysis, accident case studies, and surveys were conducted. Results: Falls, collapses, and falling-object accidents were the most common, mainly caused by inadequate structural review, poor safety management, and insufficient training. Conclusion: Strengthening structural safety, systematic management, worker-centered education, smart technologies, and institutional improvements can effectively reduce construction-site accidents.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in personal mobility devices (PMs) within urban railways and to propose emergency response strategies from a Business Continuity Planning (BCP) perspective to prevent and address these risks. In particular, the study aims to derive an effective safety management model by analyzing the critical impact that the physical vulnerability of underground spaces and thermal runaway phenomena have on the evacuation of vulnerable road users. Research Method: Scenarios were constructed based on existing railway accident databases and the Daegu subway fire case by setting variables such as fire scale, location of occurrence, and ventilation characteristics. Through this, the impact on the evacuation environment within underground spaces, such as the diffusion speed of toxic gases and reduced visibility during a lithium-ion battery fire, was quantitatively examined. Results: Analysis of the thermal runaway phase confirmed that heat transfer between battery cells begins approximately 2 to 5 minutes after the fire breaks out, leading to the rapid spread of toxic gases. In particular, the dense smoke generated by the fire drastically reduces visibility, revealing a survival threshold where voluntary evacuation by passengers becomes impossible. This suggests that an initial response system distinct from that for ordinary fires and the securing of special evacuation routes for the disabled are essential Conclusion: Given the unique characteristics of lithium-ion battery fires, it is urgent to introduce early off-gas detectors and expand specialized suppression equipment, such as Class D fire extinguishers and suffocation extinguishing blankets. Furthermore, to minimize casualties and maintain urban railway functions, an integrated safety management model must be established to secure a "30-minute golden time" for passenger safety in the subway environment by upgrading emergency response manuals for each accident stage and strengthening on-site response capabilities
Purpose: This study developed a GROW model-based life coaching program to promote self-exploration and self-understanding among university students and examined its applicability. Research design, data and methodology: A needs assessment was conducted with 30 university students, and an expert panel survey was administered to six coaches holding Korea Professional Coach qualifications or higher. Quantitative responses were analyzed using frequencies and percentages, and open-ended responses were examined through content analysis. Results: Students showed low awareness of life coaching but positively perceived its necessity. Career-related issues were the most preferred topic, while individual coaching conducted once a week for 30–60 minutes through face-to-face or blended formats was favored. Experts recommended clarifying the goals of each GROW stage, using nondirective questions, adding an orientation session, and ensuring operational flexibility. Conclusions: Based on the needs assessment and expert feedback, a five-session program entitled I Have a Question for You was developed, including an orientation session. This study presents a foundational life coaching model for university students and highlights the need for future research to examine its feasibility and effectiveness.
