Abstract
Albeit increasing concerns for social capital, most researches have been limited to the modern society. Considering the dependency of identity and formation of social capital on historical and cultural context, more concerns and researches concerning historical context are demanded. In an effort to fill the existing gap, I examine the peasants' organizations in Chosun society regarding social capital. First, “Hyangdo” originated from Buddhist community was spontaneous communitarian network based on a village unit and a kind of everyday life organization concerning the whole lives of peasants. It was rather bonding, cognitive and relational social capital than bridging, structural and institutional. Second, “Dure” was also a village unit based farmers' cooperative group. However, it was intentional labor network composed of male labor force for rice farming especially on paddy field. Thus it showed associational character in spite of its fundamental features of communitarianism. Relatively it was also a kind of bonding, cognitive and relational social capital. Third, “Gye”, a mutual-financing society was the typical associational network which was organized by individual peasant's voluntary participation for each society's own purpose. In terms of social capital, it was pro-modern social capital which was rather bridging, structural and institutional. Modern social capital shows intermixed features under the complicated influences of these traditional social capitals.
