Abstract

The Youth was the journal title published by Choi Nam Sun. The notion of this word was related to change and innovation of modern period. The youth became the word frequently used in Korea after Russo-Japanese War. It was the icon denoting nation, future and modern civilization. The merit of the Youth was that it made use of style of spoken Korean. It was the first essay in Korea. And also, the journal made popular the word youth and attached a good nuance to it. Finally, the journal introduced modern civilization and encouraged patriotic mind. The journal formulated the identity of youth in a new way. It rejected Confucianism and tried to revive Yangming's teaching. Choi intimately related Yangming's teaching, Dangun's spirit and modern civilization. He tried to intermingle these elements for a formation of national spirit. Generally speaking, the journal's character was popular and rebellious. But it represented a progress of the period.
