Abstract

Chagi style pilgi(箚記體 筆記), as a concept Chagi(箚記) and Pilgi(筆記) combined, had come to the fore in the 18th and 19th century in line with the influence of the bibliographical study of the Qing Dynasty and the huge imports of the books of the Ming-Qing period. The use of Chagi style pilgi became one of the major causes which led to harsh tone of criticism and bibliographical research in the academic discussion in the late Joseon Dynasty. To be classified into Chagi style pilgi, Chagi style pilgi including something similar thereto should be predominant style and the author’s attitude be focused on the acception or criticism of new information. Oju-Yeonmunjangjeon-Sango used Chagi style pilgi and followed well the inducive and analytic method Qing Dynasty’s bibliographical study adopted. In detail, though it’s some part has reading Chagi and travel knowledge Chagi, bibliographical Chagi is far more. As an example of bibliographical Chagi, Yi Kyukyeong cited as many as fifteen books to remedy existing concepts and knowledge in a short dialectic essay of 「Janghwangjangjibyeonjeungseol(裝潢裝池辨證說)」. The huge import of books made it practical. The characteristics of description found in Oju-Yeonmunjangjeon-Sango are as follows: i) Knowledge information from information collection to settlement in the form of Chagi style pilgi was systemized, ii) Academic discussion was activated through bibliographical and dialectic research with many citation of books, iii) The mood of academic criticism was created by the expansion of pilgi genre based on the activated bibliographical and dialectic research, and iv) Many encyclopedias and pilgis wrote under the mood of the 19th Century, unlike those of the 18th Century, were another form of ‘saving state and relieving people’ practice done by authors.
