Abstract
Recently, a group of linguists who teach education of korean language history propose a new field called ‘history of Korean language life.’ This new field focuses on the social and cultural environment where people had used Korean language and is differentiated from history of Korean language focusing on the internal structure of Korean language and its changes in aspects of writing system, phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, etc. Hangeul letters written in Chosun dynasty are essential material in studying history of Korean language life because they show private lives and close to spoken language compared to other documents. In this paper, I propose that Hanguel letters are able to be used for education of Korean language history and show specific contents; the meaning change of kinship terms, the addressee-honorifics between kin relationship and the conventional rhetoric such as repetition and ellipsis, and idiomatic expression in Hangeul letters. I hope that these will be the essential constituents to understand language change and language tradition in the education of Korean language history.
