Abstract
In this paper, I examine several features of folksongs in the North Jeola province that are predominantly based on the Namdo Kyemyeon scale but also somehow influenced by folksongs from neighbouring areas such as Kyunggi and Kyungsang provinces. I especially look into the aspects of transition of the musical idiom in the neighboring villages. Throughout this research, I find out that the musical features of Kyunggi or Dungbu folksongs are blended into the jeonbuk folksongs. I identify that those aspects are diverse according to the various characteristics of folksongs. Modes from neighbouring areas are usually not directly used in those folksongs of North jeonla Province. Rather, those are mixed with Namdao Kyemyeon scale. Various kinds of modes such as mixed two different modes or special ornaments of Kyunggi and Kyungsang Provinces used into the Kyemyeon scale are employed in those folksongs. The modes of solo or refrain parts are sometimes inconsistent but even in this case those two different forms are naturally linked and sung. This aspect can be usually found in the yard songs of extensive areas. I identify that Bier Songs are usually based on the Namdo Kyemyeon scale but widely influenced by modes of folksongs from Dongbu area.
