An Inquiry into Images of Korea Reflected in the International Social Sciences School Textbooks

Abstract
The followings are common characteristics regarding Korea founded in the social science school textbooks abroad. ① Dependant country in the pre modern era ② Divided country from the Korean War ③ Emerging industrial country ④ Lack of adequate description about country’s culture. Amongst these, the most visible images regarding Korea are divided country from Korean War and emerging industrial country. To say nothing about cultural autonomous of Korea, description about Korean culture itself is insufficient. Fragmentary images of Korea are not able to represent whole picture of Korea. While image of divided country from Korean war generate of idea of risky country. Image of industrialized country may provoke the idea of country without significant tradition and culture. Considering importance of soft power today, above images may fail to inform Korean cultural potentiality properly and as a result, her culture can be perceived as a derivative of Chinese or Japanese culture. As a conclusion, for overcoming fragmented image of Korea in the social science school textbooks abroad, concerted national and private efforts to restore whole picture of Korean culture such as the Goethe Institut China’s Confucius Institute are urgently needed.
