Hyogyŏng was valued as a core subject of education at National School and selection government officials in Unified Silla and Koryeo. Because the political theory of governing state through filial piety based on Hyo gyŏng could provide theoretical background for the political reform of strengthening royal authority and bureaucracy which was promoted in Unified Silla and Koryeo. Whereas in Joseon, Neo Confucianism was the theoretical foundation for government and the most important Confucian classic for political theory was Daehak. As a result Hyogyŏng lost the status for the book of political theory and remained merely a basic subject about the principle of filial piety for the education of children. By the mid 16th century the Hyogyŏng texts read in Joseon were the ones which were based on GeummunHyogyŏng. After the mid 16th century Neo Confucian Hyogyŏng texts such as Hyogyŏng kano written by Chu Hsi and Hyogyŏng taŭi written by Dong Ding were published and disseminated. But despite the dissemination of Hyogyŏng kano and Hyogyŏng taŭi Joseon scholars didn’t understand Chu Hsi’s critical view on the political theory of governing state through filial piety. Because they viewed Hyogyŏng as a basic subject for juvenile education so they didn’t study Hyogyŏng in depth. Hyogyŏng was used as a basic textbook for the education of children at royal family. Especially for the crown prince who would be a king in the future, the education of Hyogyŏng laid emphasis on cultivating the abilities and virtues for a king.
