Abstract
Kim, Soo-young works has been analyzed by various methods. Despite the diversity of analytical methods, the existing studies suggest that his poems are products of self-consciousness of postwar South Korean intellectuals. Many works are mentioned so far. However, an important piece like “Baegui” announced in the mid 1950s is left out in this list. This work is not covered by the existing studies on Kim, Soo-young poems. This does not stem from the problem of worth of work but from the problem of esotericism of work. This problem makes constrains to approach this work. Esoteric symbols in this work are difficult to interpret by usual reading. This article analyzes signs of “Baegui” which seem to be in the agnostic area. These signs are the result of negotiation between the poet and the surrounding cultural environment, including “Baegui” and proper nouns. Meanings of various kinds of sings are analyzed in this article. The results of this study is that “Baegui” which expresses theme of this work is allegory for their situation of young intellectuals in postwar South Korea. This article tries to interpret symbols which existing studies omitted. This article has its own significance in this point of view.
