Abstract

Donghaksa(東鶴寺) temple is located in Banpomyun, Gongju city, Chungnam province. Three Buddhist sculptures sized 110.5cm, which are composed of Shakyamuni Buddha posed in center, Yaksa Buddha in left and Amitabha Buddha in right, are enshrined in main shrine of Donghaksa-temple. In three Buddhist sculptures, 76 items including several Sutras (Buddhist document) such as votive inscription(發願文), repair record(改金重修記) and sacred objects(服藏物, bokjangmul) were uncovered. According to the sacred objects, four Buddhist sculptures, as Shakyamuni Buddha, Yaksa Buddha, Amitabha Buddha in main shrine and Amitabha Buddha in Paradise shrine(極樂殿) were begun to built in October 1605 of the lunar calender and completed in March 1606, and their original enshrined location was known as Chungrimsa temple(靑林寺) of Gaeryongsan mountain(鷄龍山). And, reparing record was discovered and it reads that in 1883 repair (改金) of Buddhist sculpture was done at Donghaksa temple. Three Buddha statues in Donghaksa temple has characteristics such as overall proportion, detailed cloth fold, mudra gesture, face expression. Those peculiarities of Buddhist sculptures were popular in early 17th century. Especially, sculptures, in early 17 century, showed periodical characteri-stics such as body composition having long waist, standardized expressed technique of cloth fold simply in vertical and parallel types. Small face size compared to body, dimension proportion expression composed square type in overall, mudra gesture handling, expression of cloth fold were characteristically popular from 16th century, and lasted until 17th century. Three Buddha statues in Donghaksa, built in 1606 after a war against Japanese invasion in 1592(壬辰), has a high value in material point, because of only a small number of sculpture remained in early 17th century. Also foundation of Three Buddha statues and votive inscription(發願文) recording original enshrined location and repair record(重修記), sculptor monks as Gakmin(覺敏), Hangsa(幸思) were known. According to a record, sculptor monk named Gakmin(覺敏) built several Buddhist sculptues including Triad statues in main shrine of Songkwangsa temple, but only three Buddha statues in Donghaksa temple remains now. Besides Buddhist sculpture, illuminatet Sutra(Sagyeong) uncovered as a sacred objects (服藏物, bokjangmul) and Sutras are valuable materials in the point of bibliography, and by them we can understand Buddhist document publishing status in early Joseon dynasty. Among them, a document titled <地藏菩薩本願經> reading sponsor prince Hyonyung(孝寧大君) is a valuable material to know relationship between Gonju area and financial support from royal family, as shown in a travelling record King Sejo(世祖) in『Sukjongsillok』Vol 6.
