Abstract

Food, clothing and shelter is most important and the basics for life at the same moment. It was the same in Joseon Dynasty period. It is true that there are poor data for understanding the concrete contents in which level and how such important basics were organized. In such condition, we found Miam, Ryu hee-chun’s Miam Diary that was recorded his daily life from 1st of October, 1567(the first year of King Seon jo) to 13th of May, 1577(the 10th year of King Seon jo). Especially, it has higher value as a data for understanding more effective and concrete fact how they prepared and managed of costumes. This article tried to vividly convey clothing life of nobility family in the middle of Joseon Dynasty for 10years with the preparation and management of garment in Miam Diary which was recorded by a noble man in 16th century. The result is as follows:First, the subject was Ryu hee-chun and Song deok-bong who prepared the costumes. While his wife, Song deok-bong made the general costumes, the components of an official uniform such as Samo, Dae, Gat and shoes was made as Ryu hee-chun led. Second, basically, the wife, daughter and a female slave prepared the costumes in the Ryu hee-chun’s, including purchasing and rental, they made a lot of garment with the gift of surrounder. Third, even though there was no concrete record for managing the garments in the Ryu hee-chun’s, we found that there were an effort to manage the costumes as examining the record for the way to handle with laundry, dyeing and iron and for exchanging a bojagi and a box.
