Abstract

This Study is aimed at reviewing the diplomatic ritual of Ming envoys of the Ming‑Qing transition as a historical background and the painting details of Hwanggang Yeonjo‑do. Hwanggang Yeonjo‑do is a documentary painting of diplomatic ritual of Ming envoy Lu Wei‑ning, who came with the document of the last Ming Emperor for the installation of the Crown Prince Sohyeon in Hwangju 1634. Hwanggang Yeonjo‑do, painted by professional painters, distributed 24 people; including Bongsan county governor Do Gyeong‑yu as reception committee of Ming envoy in Hwangju. The composition of picture is three part, the title of the top, painting of the middle and participant list of the bottom. There are four existing works, three paintings and one woodcut. Three works of Do Gyeong‑yu’s family are not original painted in 1634. One is a painting with only 23 participants except Jaenyeong county governor Choe Taek‑seon, another is just a painting without the title and name list, and the other is a woodcut inserted in Nageum‑gip as a collection of Do Gyeong‑yu’s works in 1906. Two paintings among them were copied by a painting style of the 17th Century. Another one was unveiled on a journal by a collector in Gwangju in 1974. The 24 participants of the reception committee listed at the bottom of this work, but the painting style was a folk painting in the late 19th Century. The works of Do Gyeong‑yu’ family were painted more than twice for the cult of ancestor worship. Above all, they have a distinct historical value as rare documentary paintings of the Sino‑Korean diplomatic relations among the Ming‑Qing transition.
