This article paid attention to the situations around The Broken Coin, an American Hollywood film, that it was played under the title of Myeong‒geum (名金) in Japan and Joseon, published in the form of novel in both the countries, and released as gramophone album in Joseon. The study set out to investigate which narrative elements of the film fascinated the hearts of Joseon people those days, what kind of needs and desires they projected onto the narrative, and what meanings were inherent in the fact that non‒Western colonial Joseon people repeatedly enjoyed the narrative that came from a strange country. In the process, the study found that its narrative represented the patterns of special speech located in the global communication system of popular culture produced, distributed, and consumed across borders such as the U. S. A., Japan and Joseon as well as across media such as film, book, and album. It was also found that the movie played, published and released in Joseon reflected the modern culture and experiences with modernity as well as the taste of Joseon moviegoers, readers, and audiences for modern popular narrative. In addition, the study delved into the multi‒layered and multi‒faceted aspects of popular narrative across media as well as borders and languages through the movie in modern Korea.
