Abstract

At the end of China’s Warring States Period the monthly ordinances was associated with the Five Elements. The Monthly ordinances required human affairs should be conducted by complying with the times and seasons based on thoughts of oneness between heaven and human beings and respondence between heaven and human beings. However, because four‒season and monthly ordinances in which the number 4 is the basic number was difficult in responding to the Five Elements, assignment of the monthly ordinances and the Five Elements had been attempted from various viewpoints. The most representative viewpoint may be the theory of “the last month of each season being 18 days.”However, the meaning of the monthly ordinances became significantly complicated when the ordinances, which had merely meant the serial order of twelve months in each season, were entered into the science of Ming Li and were expanded into the field of ruling in each month; consequently, the theory of “the last month of each season being 18 days” was transformed. During the process the conception of Ji‒Jang‒Gan[Human] (meaning the ten celestial stems[Heaven] preserved in the twelve earthly branches[Earth]) was produced, an expression of newly‒established science of Ming Li of the thought of three materials. The science of Ming Li, reasoning fortune of a person based on the calendar of the sexagenary cycle and the Yin‒Yang and Five elements theory, utilized the correlation between the monthly ordinances and the Five Elements more than any other Chinese ancient science.
