Individuality and Collectivity Represented in Megalithic and Non‒megalithic Burials in the Korean Early to Middle Bronze Age Hoseo Region

Abstract
Most of the previous studies about social change between the Early and Middle Bronze Ages in the Hoseo region have a serious problem in that they base their arguments on present‒nday individualism. Recognizing the problem, this paper looks at the varying ways in which individuality and collectivity were represented through burials. In order to take into consideration, in particular, the ways in which collective burial traditions were formed, reproduced, or modified by individual burials, ways of referencing between burials are analyzed. The result is then compared with daily practice conducted in the same region and period so that we can understand where those differences in the ways of referencing between burials came from. It reveals that in Area C, where the largest number of burials is reported and rice farming was conducted most intensively in the Hoseo region, a dense history of obligations and rights between and within groups accumulated in relation to their cultivated land over a long period of time. In the course of those processes, individuality and collectivity were represented in regularized and repetitive ways through burials in Area C. On the other hand, Area B is the region where the smallest number of burials is reported in the Hoseo region, and where hunting or slash‒and‒dburn farming was a suitable way of subsistence. Under these circumstances, group or individual identities were expressed very sporadically at a local level, as it would be relatively easy to change group alliances and individual affiliations. Lastly, diverse forms of daily and mortuary practice are observed in Area A. Accordingly, individual and group identities in daily practice appear to have been formed in different ways in different local groups. It would be such varied individual and group identities that were represented by the variety of associations of different burial types and attributes in Area A.
