Abstract
This paper looked through <錄の塔> in the context of Japanese literature written by Yi Hyosuk, and analyzed the effect of western symbol that was put on ideal by him. Although Yi Hyosuk criticized Korean authors who made ‘the color of Korean’ constrainedly, it is very difficult to erase the suspicious that he also cooperated it. The motivation that he created Japanese literature was participating Japanese literary world for approaching western literary world more closely. <錄の塔> that was published series is a very interesting text because it have two factors, assimilative policy by Japanese imperialism and the value of western modernism. Even though the purpose of starting publication this journal by Japanese Government General of Korea was broadcasting their imperial ideology, it failed to deliver their contents because Yi eliminated his characters’ identity as colonist/colonized. This result was caused by using English literature and body connection as a western modernism value. The Japanese literature written by Yi Hyosuk was peaked in 1940. However, after that, it became disappearing. It might be connected the truth that he could not create his pieces following western modern novel as a Korean author in Japan. In that sense, <錄の塔> was a curious compromised result between assimilative policy ans his ideal view of literature.
