Abstract
Hyeonsiyangwoongsangrinki, regarded as a work of late 18th century, is a story about conflict between husband and wife. The contrast of personality between two brothers makes the story more interesting, generating various sub‒stories due to their unique personality. But if we focus only on the personality of men, the point where women readers sympathized with women characters cannot be caught concretely. So in this article, the social situation and identity of women characters is dealt more closely. The conflict between Hyeonkyeongmoon and Juyeokyo is developed tightly on the basis of mutual equality of social status. On the contrary, Hyeonsoomoom unilaterally oppresses Yoonhyaebing. He doesn’t treat Yoonhyaebing as a noble woman as she commands herself. Yoonhyaebing can be interpreted as a type of ruined noble woman readers can easily find nearby. Hyeonsiyangwoongsangrinki is highly reputated as a work creating independent women characters vividly. To acknowledge that point, we should pay attention to the fact that the conflict between husband and wife is developed on the basis of social context of characters and readers.
