Abstract

It was the Sataek family that had monopoly over the position of Daejwapyeong during the Sabi period. Sangjwayeong Sataek Giru, who was the chairperson at royal court meetings during the reign of King Seong, led Baekje’s foreign policies. Later the Sataek family emerged as the force of maternal relatives in the royal family during the reign of King Deok. A daughter of Sataek Deokjeok was promoted to the queen status after King Mu ascended the throne, and the status of Daejwapyeong to command the noblemen as the force of maternal relatives in the royal family was further consolidated. The construction of Wangheung Buddhist Temple during the reign of King Uija and the grand Buddhist temple built by Daejwapyeong Sataek Jijeok demonstrated that the power of the Sataek family was alive and well. It was Daejwapyeong Wangheung Buddhist Temple that attended to King Uija and preserved his integrity until the royal family of Baekje broke up. Jwapyeong Sataek Somyeong, who sought asylum in Japan right after the Juryu fortress was captured, was appointed as Beopgwandaebo. His descendents include Sataek Mansu that worked as Jugimbaksa and Sataek Manbok that was appointed to Jong5Wiha as a female official at Naesisa. The descendents of Samunyeong that sought asylum along with Sataek Somyeong were active as high‒rank officials such as Daehakdu. The Sataek family made contributions to the ongoing stability of the royal authority in Baekje beyond their status as maternal relatives closely linked to power and maintained their succession at the royal court of Japan after the fall of Baekje.
