Effects of Expressive Emotions on Depression: Mediating Effects of Self-Criticism, Internal Entrapment, and External Entrapment

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of self-criticism, internal entrapment, and external entrapment in the relationship between expressed emotion and depression. Moreover, it aimed to provide a foundation that can be used as a psychological intervention by comparing the magnitude of the mediating effects of internal and external entrapment. The results of this study are as follows. First, the mediating effects of self-criticism was not significant in the relationship between expressed emotion and depression. Second, the mediating effects of internal and external entrapment were significant in the relationship between expressed emotion and depression. Third, the mediating effects of external entrapment was greater than that of internal entrapment in the relationship between expressed emotion and depression. Finally, the double mediating effects of self-criticism and internal entrapment was significant in the relationship between expressed emotion and depression.
