Abstract

The image of Lord Yeonsan was generated based on his own diary titled “Lord Yeonsan’s Diary” and various archives that reproduced existing records. He continued to be regarded as a tyrant since his obscene deeds and tyranny were highlighted, being added by some fictions. He was typically considered to be comparable to Chinese tyrants and to be a bad example among his posterity. One notable fact is that there was a less tendency to stress the image of Lord Yeonsan as a tyrant. There was a growing concern for what attitude he took toward those who got to be linked to him after he already became a tyrant, rather than for to what extent he was a tyrant. Actually, there was some distortion of Lord Yeonsan in the archives about him, which denotes that it’s required to take a more discreet approach when one tries to determine what he was really like. However, there is no need to put aside the change of the records in the archives. The archives that had ceaselessly been reproduced make a contribution to the right awareness of Lord Yeonsan. As the archives are a series of records regardless of the real looks of Lord Yeonsan, it’s worth doing to approach the history based on the archives.
