Abstract

Urbanization produce an overall change in space, economy and the realm of society and it also greatly effects the lifestyle of people who live in there. Especially in the process of modernization, Korea’s urbanization which accompanied huge changes in structure and massive internal migration gave a lot of stress and shock to the city people. This study deals with the urban community movement that appeared in the practical question how to solve these problems. Therefore, I examined the process of development in Korea’s urban community movement in the changes of socio-spacial context caused by urbanization. To categorize the periodic characteristics, we can find out the ‘adaptive’ urban community movement to resolve the poverty and to help the self-support and the self-reliance of the city people in 1960’s to 1970’s. In 1980’s, there were ‘resistive’ urban community movement to protect the right to live from the urban redevelopment and the forced demolition. In 1990’s, ‘defensive’ urban community movement appeared to protect the city people’s life world based on the high profile and desire on the participation and the quality of life. By the late 1990’s, ‘inventive’ urban community movement appeared to make an alternative to support the city people’s economical self-sufficient and to raise the awareness of the settlement. But by occasion of existing movements’ limitation, new ideas came up to take root among the people’s place and everyday life. So in late 2000s, ‘collaborative’ urban community movement appeared to comprehensively reconstruct the space, economy and the realm of society in the city through the Private Public cooperative planning. In this study, I researched the case of Ansan city and Suwon city in Gyeonggido to discover the periodical significance and the practical task of ‘collaboration model.’ The areas in this case were managing intermediary and comprehensive cooperative system such as Community Building Support Center upon the principle of autonomy, sustainability and integrity. And also had made various efforts to strengthen local residents’ participation and capability through the contest and the education. So the local governments include Seoul city or other organizations where Community Building business has been chosen as a major task need to refer these precedent experience.
