Abstract

This study critically examined Transactions of the Korea Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society which has been published by western residents in Korea since the beginning of the 20th century. The early publications from 1900 to 1924 were particularly analyzed in order to study how these writers viewed Korea and what shaped their perspectives during this period of turbulence. The need for this study arose from a question whether the Transactions was a part of the orientalist discourse. How should we, in this de‒colonized era of 21st century, read these western writings representing Korea during the port opening period in early 20th century? As a result of this research, the bibliography of each articles was arranged as a separate table and it was also pointed out that these writers might have misinterpreted Chinese or Korean sources. It was concluded that these western writers of early RASKB mainly held three kinds of perception of Korea: the civilizationist, observer, and insider perspectives. In many cases, these perspectives overlapped in their writings. In addition, it was advised to other researchers who would conduct a research on Transactions in the future that they should pay attention to the fact that the romanization of Korean was inconsistent at that time, and that many articles implicitly revealed the author’s opinion by using biblical expressions or metaphor. In this way, this study attempted to explore the origin of the western perception of Korea.
