Abstract

This study investigates strategies to enhance the digital literacy competencies of librarians to improve digital literacy for individuals with disabilities. As digital transformation progresses, the digital divide remains a significant issue, particularly for people with disabilities. Libraries and librarians play a crucial role in bridging this gap by providing digital literacy education and services. This research involved a comprehensive review of existing literature, surveys, and in-depth interviews with librarians responsible for disability services. The findings indicate that while librarians recognize the importance of digital literacy for individuals with disabilities, they lack practical experience and targeted training. To address this, the study proposes systematic and continuous educational programs focused on digital literacy skills and understanding disabilities. The proposed strategies aim to reinforce the role of librarians as key providers of digital information and educators, thus promoting digital inclusion and enhancing social participation for individuals with disabilities. This research contributes to the field by providing actionable insights and recommendations for improving librarian competencies and library services for the disabled community.

Abstract

In lower elementary integrated curriculum, classes using diverse materials related to learning topics are expanding. However, in the current school library catalog system, the Digital Library Service (DLS), searching for materials using subject headings is challenging. This difficulty stems from inconsistent subject heading practices and the lack of controlled vocabulary, resulting in lower accuracy and recall in searches. Therefore, this study aimed to improve access to learning materials by developing a subject thesaurus linked to the second-grade integrated curriculum. The research methodology included literature review and case studies to establish criteria for subject term extraction and selection, followed by systematic structuring of the thesaurus according to ANSI/NISO Z39.19 guidelines for defining term relationships. To validate the thesaurus, a survey was conducted from late April to early May 2024 with 50 teachers and librarians working in elementary schools. Results indicated that teachers and librarians found the thesaurus beneficial for both educational resource searching and material utilization. This study suggests that a thesaurus tailored to the integrated curriculum can enhance the DLS subject search functionality and increase accessibility to various learning materials in elementary schools.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify research trends related to information technology and artificial intelligence and to analyze changes in these trends over time. To conduct the research, we utilized the Web of Science (WoS) database and collected a total of 4,233 articles from 2011 to June 2024, performing a bibliographic mapping analysis. To observe changes over time, the data was divided into three periods: Period 1 (2011-2015), Period 2 (2016-2020), and Period 3 (2021-June 2024). The analysis revealed that clusters such as ‘academic library,’ ‘information literacy,’ and ‘librarian’ were of consistent interest throughout the entire period. In Period 1, a Web 2.0 cluster emerged, composed of keywords such as Library 2.0, Web 2.0, and social media. In Period 2, the ‘bibliometrics’ cluster expanded significantly, and keywords like ‘big data’ and ‘deep learning’ began to appear. In Period 3, new clusters such as ‘artificial intelligence,’ ‘machine learning,’ and ‘COVID-19’ emerged, highlighting these as key research topics.

Abstract

Korean students continue their academic journey amid intense competition and rapid physical and mental changes during their growth. As a result, some students experience difficulties in socio-emotional development, such as a lack of empathy, communication skills, and emotional instability, which can lead to challenges in social adaptation. This study investigates elementary teacher librarians’ perceptions of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and explores ways to effectively implement SEL in school libraries. To conduct this research, an online survey was first administered. Following this, in-depth interviews were conducted with a subset of respondents who agreed to participate, to explore practical ways of applying SEL in school libraries. The results revealed that elementary teacher librarians recognize the importance of SEL and strongly agree on its necessity. Moreover, specific strategies for practicing SEL in school libraries, available teaching and learning resources, challenges faced, and potential improvements were identified. Based on these findings, the study carefully examines the educational implications of SEL in elementary school libraries and provides foundational data for implementing SEL practices in these settings. This research highlights the educational significance of SEL in school library education and contributes to outlining specific directions for its practical application.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the intellectual structure of university library research by complementarily utilizing co-citation analysis and direct citation analysis. The study analyzed 627 papers published since 2002 related to university libraries and their references retrieved from the Korea Citation Index (KCI) database. Co-citation analysis revealed 15 major research topic subclusters, which were further categorized into seven main areas: library space, systems, users/usage, service quality, online services, specialized services, and planning/evaluation. Analysis of temporal changes in research topics confirmed a significant shift in university library research themes around 2012-2013. Direct citation analysis uncovered six additional research topics not identified in the co-citation analysis: organizational management, electronic scholarly information, user studies, next-generation digital libraries, efficiency analysis, and cooperative storage facilities. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of complementary use of co-citation and direct citation analyses in examining intellectual structures.

Abstract

The National Archives of Korea (NAK) has adopted a migration strategy to convert preservation formats to ensure the long-term accessibility and reproducibility of digital records. To select an appropriate preservation format, it is necessary to conduct evaluations based on the preservation format selection system. Evaluating file formats is challenging due to limited access to reliable information about file formats and the requirement for specialized knowledge of their technical specifications and characteristics. As a result, the evaluation process can act as a barrier to the practical implementation of the preservation format selection system. This study aims to improve the efficiency of preservation format selection evaluations by proposing the functionality of a support tool divided into two domains: information management and evaluation support. Furthermore, to assess the feasibility of this tool, the study analyzed the information provided by three reliable file format information portals and compared it with the evaluation criteria (common) of the preservation format selection system to examine the potential for information integration.

Abstract

This study focuses on user experiences and satisfaction with VR content to analyze the impact of VR technology on library user experiences and service satisfaction, ultimately aiming to propose future directions for library services. The key findings of the study are as follows. First, the most positive experiential factor in the use of VR content services in libraries was the sensory aspect. Among participants who experienced the library’s VR content, the item “feeling interest and attraction through sensory stimulation” recorded the highest average score. In contrast, the lowest-rated experiential factor was related to behavioral aspects. Second, a survey comprising 13 items was conducted to assess satisfaction with library VR content services. The items with relatively high satisfaction were mostly related to library staff providing instructions on how to use the content and offering support in case of technical issues. In contrast, the items with relatively low satisfaction were associated with the library’s physical spaces and facilities. Third, the most frequently mentioned discomfort when using VR content was the experience of dizziness, identified as the primary inconvenience. This was followed by symptoms of eye strain.
