Abstract

This study analyzes and organizes the key considerations for transforming MODS bibliographic records into BIBFRAME 2.0, focusing on the relationships between entities such as Work-Instance-Item, as well as Agent, Subject, and Event. MODS adopts a single-record structure in which information about intellectual content, manifestations, holdings, and use conditions, along with responsible agents, subjects, and publication events, is described in parallel. Such characteristics may cause semantic ambiguity when MODS data are transformed into BIBFRAME’s entity- and relationship-oriented bibliographic model. To address this issue, this study examines major MODS elements based on the official Library of Congress MODS 3.7-BIBFRAME 2.0 mapping guidelines and constructs an example MODS record reflecting cataloging practices for online resources in the National Library of Korea. The analysis reclassifies core MODS elements from an entity- and relationship-centered perspective. The results indicate that titles, responsibility statements, subjects, and classifications are appropriately structured as relationships between Work and Agent or Subject entities, while publication information is more suitably expressed as relationships between Instance and Event entities. By redefining MODS to BIBFRAME conversion as a process of entity and relationship decision-making rather than simple element-to-element mapping, this study provides practical guidance for implementing BIBFRAME in national bibliographic environments.

Abstract

This study aimed to derive policy support strategies to enhance the effectiveness of School Library-based Instruction (SLBI) by empirically analyzing the perceptions and support needs of teachers regarding school library services across elementary, middle, high, and special education schools nationwide. Utilizing an adapted LibQUAL+ model, the study measured the perceived importance and performance of service quality for SLBI across three dimensions: Service Affect, Information Control, and Library as Place. Furthermore, Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) was applied to systematically identify priorities for service improvement. Based on the analysis of 5,095 teacher responses, the expansion of dedicated personnel and infrastructure was identified as the top priority for educational support. Key improvement areas for SLBI included a deeper understanding of user needs, proactive service delivery, the expansion of electronic resources and cutting-edge equipment in response to digital transformation, and the strengthening of curriculum-integrated collaborative spaces. Significant differences in support priorities were observed depending on the regional office of education, school level, and staffing type. These findings suggest that future policies to vitalize SLBI should shift away from a provider-centered, uniform approach and instead establish a strategic, multi-dimensional support system that reflects the unique operational contexts and characteristics of individual schools.

Abstract

With the recent rise in retraction rates in academic publishing, ‘retraction lag’—the delay between publication and retraction—and ‘citation inertia’—the continued citation of papers post-retraction—have emerged as critical issues. Furthermore, a critical issue was identified wherein the systemic collapse of publishing processes has led to instances of mass retractions. Given the nature of its subjects and methodologies, the social sciences entail high ethical and methodological complexity during data collection and research design, necessitating distinct considerations and addressing challenges different from those in the natural sciences. Accordingly, this study conducted a bibliometric analysis of retracted papers within the social sciences indexed in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) of the Web of Science to examine: 1) the time-to-retraction; 2) the distribution and patterns of citations for retracted papers; and 3) the status of journals and publishers with high retraction frequencies. The analysis revealed that the average time-to-retraction was 27.45 months (median: 17 months). The average number of citations per retracted paper was 15.12, with the most highly cited paper accumulating 2,228 citations. Notably, in the case of the most cited paper, 13.33% of the total citations occurred after the retraction, confirming the severity of citation inertia. Finally, observing that 42.65% of the retracted papers were published by the affiliated publishers Wiley and HINDAWI, this study highlights the critical collapse of the peer review system within “Special Issue” operations and examines the process leading to mass retractions and subsequent journal discontinuations. This study is significant in that it comprehensively assesses the impact of retracted papers on the academic community and provides foundational data for fostering a healthy and robust academic ecosystem.

Abstract

This study was conducted as a foundational research for establishing the Comprehensive Development Plan (2025-2035) for Yuseong-gu Public Libraries, with the aim of deriving policy directions for library development that reflect the regional characteristics of Yuseong-gu as a science and technology city. To achieve this objective, data were collected sequentially through focus group interviews (FGI) with 4 library experts and 10 public library practitioners, followed by a survey of 1,005 Yuseong-gu residents. The key findings and discussion points are as follows. First, it is necessary to establish specialized library services in science and technology by leveraging the knowledge resources of Daedeok Innopolis and nearby universities. Second, a balanced library distribution strategy is required to bridge the service accessibility gap between new town and old urban areas. Third, customized programs tailored to different life stages are needed in response to demographic changes such as low birth rates and an aging population. Fourth, spatial innovation in libraries is required through the transition to multipurpose cultural spaces and the remodeling of aging facilities. Fifth, there is an urgent need to recruit librarians in compliance with legal staffing standards and to secure professionals equipped with digital competencies. Sixth, the advancement of collection development policies based on usage data and service area characteristics is necessary. Seventh, the expansion of services through inter-library cooperation networks and partnerships with local cultural institutions is required. Eighth, strengthening promotional strategies centered on digital channels and active marketing to attract non-users are necessary.

Abstract

This study used author-keyword network analysis to examine the structural development of intellectual freedom research in the Korean library and information science. We retrieved 745 Korea Citation Index (KCI)-indexed papers and, after screening titles and abstracts, selected 67 papers directly addressing intellectual freedom. Author keywords were standardized by resolving variant spellings and synonyms and removing irrelevant terms, yielding 219 refined keywords. Keyword frequencies and a co-occurrence matrix were computed and normalized using Pearson correlation coefficients. The network was visualized and clustered with NodeXL. The results identify “censorship” and “banned books” as central keywords, strongly linked to collection development, material selection, publishers, and studies of the Japanese colonial period. Six thematic clusters emerged: (1) collection-policy-based censorship, (2) the Japanese colonial censorship system, (3) public library reading campaigns, (4) inclusive services for information-vulnerable groups, (5) privacy, and (6) regulation and filtering of online expression. Findings indicate a growing intersection between intellectual freedom and personal information protection in the digital environment, suggesting that Korean scholarship has broadened from traditional collection and censorship debates to encompass user rights and governance of online information.

Abstract

This research investigates practitioners’ perceptions within parent organizations concerning the records management of public institution subsidiaries and identifies key determinants affecting these perceptions. Utilizing survey data from records management and subsidiary oversight professionals, the study employed t-tests, Friedman tests, and ANOVA for empirical analysis. The findings reveal that perceptions of necessity do not vary significantly across different functional roles, indicating a robust internal consensus. Conversely, perception levels were positively correlated with the recognition of “joint responsibility” between parent and subsidiary entities. The study also found that parent organizations’ support efforts are significantly influenced by the degree of formal institutionalization. Moreover, the perceived value and necessity of records differed significantly across various subsidiary categories. These results suggest that subsidiary records management constitutes a critical evidence-based infrastructure that safeguards the publicness and accountability of public institutions. The study concludes by recommending the formalization of shared accountability and the adoption of differentiated, stage-by-stage institutionalization strategies based on subsidiary characteristics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze research trends in libraries and artificial intelligence (AI) in the era of generative AI through a bibliometric triangulation approach. To this end, 422 research articles on libraries and AI published since 2023 were collected from the Web of Science database. Based on these data, the study identified the intellectual foundations, categorized the thematic areas, and analyzed the core discourses of representative papers, thereby providing a multi-dimensional understanding of research trends and the expanding phase of the library-AI domain. By synthesizing the results of each analysis stage, three research streams were identified: the adoption of AI, the application of generative AI, and AI literacy. The findings indicate that library-AI research is transitioning from a stage of technological exploration and adoption to a stage of practical service restructuring. Furthermore, the analysis reveals an integrated discourse framework centered on AI literacy, encompassing policy, ethics, and librarian re-education. This suggests that AI literacy should be understood as a fundamental basis for developing practical strategies in library settings and redefining professional expertise. This study holds methodological significance by presenting the intellectual foundations, research themes, and core discourses of library-AI research in a multi-layered structure through a triangulation approach, and precisely mapping its expansionary trajectory.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and propose an operational model for dementia prevention programs that public libraries can carry out in local communities, based on the increasing dementia risk in a super-aged society and the prevention-oriented policy stance. A literature review and domestic and international case analyses were conducted, and surveys were administered to 72 older adults (in person) who participated in dementia prevention programs at public libraries in Daegu and to 153 public librarians (online); the responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that older adults showed a high perceived need for dementia prevention services in public libraries and a high intention to participate in future programs, and that program satisfaction and intention to recommend were also high, confirming acceptability. In contrast, during the participation process, needs for improvement were identified with respect to registration procedures as well as promotion and accessibility. Librarians likewise agreed on the need for the services, but tended to prefer resource-based services, perceiving substantial burdens related to program planning and implementation and communication with users. Reflecting these priority differences between older adults and librarians, this study proposes a collaborative model that allocates roles between libraries (space, resources, outreach, and accessibility support) and professional agencies such as Dementia Relief Centers (content, instructors, and counseling/referral support), based on a five-stage virtuous-cycle structure of Preparation, Design, Implementation, Collaboration, and Evaluation. This model is expected to enhance the feasibility of dementia prevention services in public libraries and to serve as foundational data for their standardization and dissemination.

Abstract

As scholarly information increasingly gains attention as high-quality training data for artificial intelligence (AI), there is a growing interest in the Creative Commons (CC) licenses applied to academic publications. This study aims to analyze the determinants influencing the selection of CC licenses by Korean researchers for their academic papers. To this end, 3,320 open access articles published by Korean researchers in hybrid journals between 2020 and 2024 were selected for analysis. Cross-tabulation and chi-square tests were conducted to identify differences in CC license selection based on funding type, authorship composition, the corresponding author’s institutional affiliation type, academic discipline, and journal impact. Furthermore, a multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the specific effects of these variables. The results revealed that the inclusion of international co-authors increased the likelihood of adopting open CC licenses. Conversely, articles published in journals with higher impact factors showed a tendency toward more restrictive CC licenses. The findings of this study are expected to serve as foundational data for improving the CC licensing policies in South Korea and expanding the utilization of scholarly information as AI training data.

Abstract

This study aims to systematize the reading material selection factors from the users’ perspective and to identify their relative importance and priorities. To this end, based on the appeal factor system and empirical research on book selection, an AHP model structured with 5 superordinate factors and 22 subordinate factors was designed, and survey data on pairwise comparisons between factors were collected to identify relative importance and priority. Also, the study identified the characteristic that the relative importance of reading material selection factors varies depending on the segmented characteristics of users(gender, age, reading cycle, and book genre). The results of this study are significant in that it provides a theoretical foundation for improving the information search environment from the perspective of information users by identifying the selection factors that readers consider important.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the patterns of academic use, perceptions, and influencing factors of generative AI among Nepali international students. Survey data were collected from 88 Nepali international students enrolled at University A in South Korea, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that ChatGPT is the most widely used generative AI tool, with 78.41% of respondents using AI for academic purposes several times a week or more. As English serves as the primary medium of instruction in educational system in Nepal, Nepali students with high English proficiency tend to use generative AI not merely for translation but as a versatile learning support tool. The t-test results reveal a significant difference in perceived academic usefulness by major, while the regression analysis shows that English and Nepali proficiency significantly influence multiple domains, including comprehension of academic materials. These findings suggest the need for level-based and tailored AI education that consider international students’ language proficiency and academic background.
