Abstract

This study analyzes how the expansion of citation relationships impacts the stability of main path analysis results in citation networks, focusing on Korean research literature about public libraries published in KCI-indexed journals from 2008 to 2023. By including both cited and citing documents in the dataset, the research quantitatively and qualitatively examines main path stability under forward, backward, and bi-directional citation expansion, utilizing the key-route search algorithm. The results show that the main path is relatively stable when only forward or backward expansion is applied (overlap ratio: 0.70-0.86), but significant changes occur when both expansion methods are used simultaneously (overlap ratio: 0.38-0.39), with more than half of the main path components replaced. The initial phase of the main path (2010-2015) remains consistent across all expansion conditions, whereas the latter period (2016-2023) introduces new topics—such as the metaverse and library services for people with disabilities—when forward and backward expansion are both applied. These findings offer empirical evidence about the effect of citation expansion on main path analysis, demonstrating that broader citation expansion improves the reliability of tracking recent research trajectories and strengthens methodological rigor in citation network studies.

Abstract

This study aimed to propose strategies for enhancing the services of cooperative repositories at metropolitan representative libraries, with a focus on the Busan Library. To this end, a survey was conducted among users and librarians of the cooperative repository to examine their perceptions of and needs regarding its services. Based on the results, this study proposes five strategies for service improvement: (1) improvement of reading and circulation services, (2) identification of new services, (3) development and provision of digital collections, (4) establishment of a dedicated organization and reinforcement of staffing, and (5) formulation of cooperative repository policies at the metropolitan library level. This study is expected to serve as a fundamental resource for developing strategies to enhance the use and services of cooperative repositories.

Abstract

The healthcare field actively utilizes open access as a means of scholarly communication to realize the social value of research. However, research on the scholarly communication patterns of early-career researchers who are increasingly recognized as a group poised to lead changes in the academic ecosystem remains extremely limited, particularly in South Korea. Therefore, this study empirically analyzed the perceptions and experiences of publishing in open access journals among early-career researchers in South Korea’s healthcare field. An online survey was conducted from July 21 to August 26, 2025, securing a total of 259 valid responses, which were quantitatively analyzed. A total of 82.2% of respondents had experience submitting to open access journals, and they perceived open access publishing as helpful for disseminating research outcomes and increasing citations. Conversely, they felt burdened by publication costs and rated the journals as having low credibility. Professors had high expectations for fast review and publication, while health sciences researchers perceived greater social impact. Overall, early-career researchers were satisfied with their open access publishing experience and expressed positive intentions to publish again. This is the first study in South Korea to systematically analyze the perceptions and practices of early-career researchers in the health sciences and medicine regarding open access publishing and provides baseline data for future scholarly communication research.

Abstract

This study delineates the era of the scholar-librarian as spanning from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century and, through an overview of several major figures-including the prominent scholar-librarian Gabriel Naudé (1600-1653)-seeks to clarify both the circumstances that led scholars to be affiliated with libraries and the reasons libraries employed such scholar-librarians within their historical context. During this period, Europe witnessed the rise of dynastic states, the weakening of ecclesiastical authority, and the gradual emergence of Enlightenment thought. Intellectual exchange among scholars increased, fostering a collective self-understanding of themselves as citizens of the “Republic of Letters.” Based on this historical background, libraries placed primary emphasis on the acquisition of books, and it appears that scholars with advanced philological and bibliographical expertise were appointed as librarians to fulfill these functions. The historical foundations supporting the scholar-librarian began to shift from the eighteenth century onward. This study, therefore, considers the factors that contributed to this transformation and discusses how these developments weakened the traditional role of the scholar-librarian. Through this analysis, the study intends to offer implications for exploring the social roles libraries should assume in today's rapidly changing environment and for identifying the professional expertise that librarians need to be recognized for.

Abstract

This study empirically analyzed the impact of regional population changes on public library use, aiming to provide a foundation for developing population-responsive library management strategies. The research focused on City Y, which experienced significant demographic fluctuations between 2019 and 2024. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted using population statistics from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and library usage data from the National Library Statistics System. The results showed that the total population of City Y had a significant positive correlation with interlibrary loan activities. More importantly, local(sub-regional) population figures were positively associated with most usage indicators, including visitor numbers, circulation volume, and collection turnover rates. In addition, factors such as library floor area and operating expenses were identified as key variables influencing utilization levels. These findings suggest that library use is more strongly affected by demographic characteristics within localized living zones than by the city’s overall population size. Consequently, differentiated strategies for spatial expansion and budget allocation that reflect local demographic shifts are essential for achieving sustainable and equitable public library development.

Abstract

This study aims to propose an optimized plan for establishing an efficient shared preservation repository at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Library by analyzing collection growth trends and spatial capacity based on material types. Using national library statistics from 2006 to 2023, the study calculated an average annual collection growth rate of 5.43% and projected the total number of library holdings through 2053. The forecast estimates approximately 6.64 million volumes by 2053, far exceeding the current capacity limit of 3.39 million volumes—indicating a shortage rate of 95.7%. To address this spatial deficit, the study proposes a mixed storage strategy that combines fixed shelving systems for rare and non-book materials with compact or automated shelving systems for general collections. Under this hybrid model, the required total area is estimated at 3,538.5㎡ for the fixed-and-compact combination and 1,457.9㎡ for the fixed-and-automated configuration. In addition, the study proposed a three-phase roadmap—foundation, expansion, and maturity—linked with mission, strategy, and key performance indicators, as well as an integrated model connecting digital archiving and larchiveum services. This research provides an empirical framework integrating collection forecasting with spatial and facility scaling, thereby contributing to long-term policy design and practical decision-making for public library preservation infrastructure.

Abstract

The study aims to explore information seeking behavior of career-interrupted women during their job-seeking processes. It analyzes their career barriers, information needs, main information sources and channels, and the distinctive features of their information-seeking behavior throughout the reemployment processes. To achieve these objectives, both survey and semi-structured interview methods were employed. Statistical analysis and content analysis were conducted to examine differences in information-seeking behavior across the three stages of reemployment(recognition, withdrawal, and job-seeking stages) as well as according to demographic characteristics. Furthermore, the study analyzed perceptions of roles played by public information institutions, including public employment support agencies and public libraries. Based on the findings, the study suggested practical implications and strategies for providing customized information services tailored to the needs of career-interrupted women. It also recommended directions of public support institutions for career-interrupted women and public libraries in supporting their reemployment.

Abstract

Since the release of ChatGPT, researchers have shown growing interest in using large language models (LLMs) for academic writing. This study explored the possibilities and limitations of AI use in summarizing the core content of research papers into abstracts. We analyzed 204 papers published in the Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science (2022-2024) by comparing author-written abstracts with those generated by ChatGPT. Quantitative analyses examined similarities among the originals, AI-generated abstracts, full texts, and different prompt types, supplemented by expert perception. Results showed that AI-generated abstracts were semantically close to the originals based on BERT and TF-IDF scores but differed in word choice and expression. Abstracts generated with Korean prompts showed the highest similarity to both the originals and the full texts, indicating that the prompt language affected style and content representation. Experts viewed LLMs as helpful tools for improving clarity and fluency in writing. Overall, the findings suggest the potential of LLMs as collaborative partners in abstract writing.

Abstract

This study analyzed the requirements for users of the DOI registration management system of the Korea DOI Center to improve the registration and management service of DOI, one of the persistent identifiers. To this end, users were divided according to the type and the requirements for each type were identified. First, 349 inquiries received by member organizations were collected and the requirements of member organizations were analyzed, and then the requirements of partner organizations were derived by interviewing 7 people in charge of 5 partner organizations. As a result, it was found that member organizations have requirements related to DOI registration, such as improving the registration management system itself or strengthening the guidance function, and in the case of partner organizations, it was found that they have requirements related to the recommendation of partner organizations, such as improving the member management function under their subsidiary and developing a new API. Accordingly, the need for the DOI Center to seek a dualized service improvement strategy according to the characteristics of member organizations and partner organizations based on the expressed requirements was proposed.

Abstract

This study analyzed the effects of users’ emotional responses on the continued use intention of public library e-book services, mediated by interactivity, familiarity, and satisfaction. Based on the PAD (Pleasure, Arousal, Dominance) emotional response theory, a research model was established. The results of the structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis showed that emotional pleasure and perceived control had significant positive effects on interactivity, familiarity, and satisfaction, while satisfaction was found to be the most influential determinant of continued use intention. These findings suggest that both emotional experiences and cognitive satisfaction should be considered to promote the activation and sustained use of public library e-book services. Accordingly, libraries should design interactive and emotionally engaging service environments that enhance user familiarity and enjoyment. This study holds academic significance in presenting an emotional response-based theoretical model that explains the continued use of public library e-book services.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the current status of scholarly information services in public libraries in Korea. To this end, it examines data from the Korean National Library Statistics System, metropolitan representative libraries, and three individual public libraries. The analysis of national statistics revealed that approximately 61% of public libraries provide scholarly information services, and that smaller libraries—based on budget and membership size—are less likely to operate such services. Furthermore, case studies on the metropolitan representative library and three individual libraries investigated their operation methods, number of databases offered, and access points. The findings indicate that Korean public libraries’ scholarly information services are limited in quantitative scale, vary significantly in service quality among libraries, and suffer from insufficient budgets, staffing, and expertise. These limitations appear to stem from a lack of consensus on the definition and scope of scholarly information services, as well as insufficient recognition of their necessity. This study contributes as foundational data for discussing future directions to enhance scholarly information services in Korean public libraries.

Abstract

In Korea, the establishment of research data utilization and management systems began relatively later than in major regions and international organizations such as Europe, North America, and UNESCO. Institutionally, the Data Management Plan (DMP) system is being adopted, and legislation related to research data is currently under parliamentary review. However, coherent and practical standards remain insufficient, particularly regarding the definition and scope of research data, the attribution of rights, and differing interpretations across multiple legal frameworks. This paper interprets the legal status and rights structure of research data in the context of open science and presents criteria for determining the scope of research data based on legal interpretation, principles for lifecycle-based processing and stewardship, and a framework for coordinating rights and responsibilities among stakeholders. It specifically examines the conflicts arising from the overlapping application of the Copyright Act, the Public Data Act, and the National Research and Development Innovation Act, and proposes policy directions that balance researchers’ moral rights and responsibilities with the public right of access. The proposed definitions of research data scope, interpretations of researcher rights, and corresponding institutional improvement measures are expected to help policymakers, managing institutions, and users develop a clearer understanding of research data and contribute to establishing research ethics and a stable open science system.

Abstract

This study conducted a keyword network analysis of 168 articles published in KCI-listed journals between 2000 and July 2025 to examine research trends in digital citizenship in Korea. The research procedure included data selection, keyword refinement, frequency analysis, keyword co-occurrence network analysis, and time-series analysis. The results showed that digital citizenship research has steadily increased since the 2010s, with rapid growth observed particularly after 2021. Keyword network analysis identified 15 sub-clusters, which were further integrated into 5 broader categories for interpretation. The findings indicate that digital citizenship research in Korea has primarily focused on teachers and learners in the field of education. At the same time, emerging technologies such as the metaverse and AI, as well as social issues such as digital crimes, have emerged as major topics. In addition, research subjects have become increasingly diversified. However, studies from the perspective of digital inclusion remain limited. Accordingly, future studies on digital citizenship should extend beyond an education-centered approach to encompass diverse academic fields such as communication and library and information science. In addition, research addressing emerging technologies, such as AI, and various social issues needs to be further strengthened, and an inclusive perspective that embraces information-disadvantaged groups is of particular importance.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving innovation across the field of information services, and academic libraries are increasingly adopting AI chatbots. The Web Services Team at the University of Oklahoma Libraries initially developed an in-house chatbot leveraging natural language processing based on question and answer data collected from interactions between librarians and users. They later transitioned the system to Ivy.ai. Through a semi-structured interview, this study presents an analysis of the development and implementation of the libraries’ AI chatbot focusing on the adoption process, challenges, and internal organizational dynamics. The findings indicate that successful chatbot implementation requires not only technological development but also efforts to alleviate organizational concerns about change and to cultivate a collaborative culture. These results offer practical implications for libraries and institutions considering the adoption of AI chatbots and contribute to the theoretical foundation for understanding organizational acceptance of evolving AI technologies.
